The Burger King menu is chock-full of affordable fast-food bites, from its perfectly seasoned nuggets and savory Original Chicken Sandwich to its expertly salted fries—but nothing checks every box quite like its signature burger, the Whopper.

Though many have warned not to mess with perfection, a new Burger King initiative—which allows customers to share comments and complaints directly with President Tom Curtis—has pulled back the curtain on what fans want to see change at the chain. After customers asked, the company listened. The Burger King Whopper is getting a fresh upgrade, with three changes fans can expect that will elevate the experience.

Here, read all about the new and improved burger.

The new Burger King Whopper changes

Yesterday, Burger King announced that one of its most iconic menu items was getting an upgrade. The traditional Whopper consists of a quarter-pound flame-grilled beef patty cooked to juicy perfection, sandwiched between a soft sesame-seed bun. The burger is topped with tomatoes, onion, lettuce, pickles and, of course, ketchup and mayonnaise. Launched in 1957 and sold at Burger King’s first location in Miami, the sandwich has stood the test of time—so what exactly is changing?

According to a press release, “The higher-quality Whopper experience includes a more premium, better-tasting bun, served in a box to ensure it makes it to guests exactly the way it left the kitchen. Stacked tall with freshly cut onions and tomatoes, crisp lettuce, tangy pickles and better-tasting mayo, every Whopper is crafted to deliver the flame-grilled flavor guests expect—now elevated from the first bite to the last.”

History of the Whopper

Though there have been tales that the Whopper was created as a result of a so-called “burger war” between Burger King and similar chains, BK confirmed  that wasn’t the case. In fact, its main rival, McDonald’s, introduced the Big Mac 11 years after the Whopper debuted.

However, many have reported that Jim McLamore, one of Burger King’s co-founders, saw another local restaurant having success with mega-sized burgers, inspiring him to up the ante. When the Whopper made its debut at Burger King’s original Miami storefront, it was sold for a mere 37 cents.

New changes at Burger King include AI initiatives

Burger King recently revealed that it will be using AI in its stores across the country in the form of a chatbot inside employee headsets. The tool, named Patty, has the capability to alert managers about inventory, keep tabs on ingredients for certain menu items and, most notably, monitor employee interactions with customers by listening for certain key phrases that might indicate friendliness—for example, “please” and “thank you.”

“It’s really a coaching tool, right? To help you as an employee become more hospitable, and we’re going to help you also with certain operation flaws that may occur that can be a little bit complex,” explained Thibault Roux, Burger King’s chief digital officer, per NBC News

Burger King Whopper goes head-to-head with McDonald’s Big Arch

Burger King isn’t the only fast food chain who’s stepping things up a notch. Earlier this week, McDonald’s announced that their biggest burger, the Big Arch Burger, would be making its way to stores on March 3. The new menu item consists of two quarter-pound patties, topped with three slices of white cheddar, as well as lettuce, onions, pickles, crispy onions and the new Big Arch Sauce on a sesame and poppy seed bun.

Whether you’re team Whopper or eager to try McDonald’s new Big Arch, one thing’s for sure: these upgrades show that fast-food chains are listening to what you want and working hard to deliver the quality and taste you deserve.
