Starting May 1, you'll pay $10 more—but the value might surprise you compared to competitors
Key Takeaways
- Sam's Club is increasing their cost of membership effective May 1, 2026.
- Club membership jumps to $60 while Plus membership rises to $120.
- Shoppers have mixed feelings about the price increase, with some feeling it's worth it.
There are plenty of benefits to shopping at a warehouse-style retailer like Sam’s Club. Bigger quantity, bigger selection and bigger discounts make this store a fan-favorite, but shoppers just found out that in addition to these wins comes a heftier membership fee starting next month—and people have mixed feelings about it. Here, read all about the Sam’s Club membership price change, how much the increase is and what shoppers are saying about the membership fee.
Sam’s Club membership price change surprises shoppers
A little over a week ago, Sam’s Club shoppers received an email explaining a change made to their membership. “Thank you for being a Sam’s Club Member. Effective May 1, 2026, membership prices will change from $50/year to $60/year for Club members, and from $110/year to $120/year for Plus Members. Plus members will benefit from an increased 2% Sam’s Cash rewards cap, from $500 to $750 per year.” The email continued, “This update helps us continue delivering unbeatable value and exceptional shopping experiences while investing in an ever-expanding set of member benefits.”

Many shoppers have shared their thoughts on the increase, with mixed feedback rolling in. Some felt upset over this sudden increase, while others shared they still felt satisfied with paying an extra $10 for what the membership gets you.
“I know every situation is different, but for me, I personally am okay with the Sam’s Cash increase. We have a Plus membership paired with the black Sam’s Mastercard and the cash back is great if you have a large family (lots of groceries and lots of driving),” wrote one shopper on Reddit. On the contrary, others were disappointed by this change, with another shopper writing, “Yeah, not happy with this, especially since we don’t get the free shipping unless $50 total or more. Two price increases over the last four years if I remember right.” This refers to the 2022 price hike.
Though some are upset by the Sam’s Club membership price change, this retailer still beats similar stores like Costco when it comes to membership. Costco’s top-tier membership, Executive, costs $130 a year, while their basic membership, Gold Star, costs $65 a year.
While there hasn’t yet been specifics revealed as far as the reason for this increase, Sam’s Club shared with USA Today that they “have adjusted our membership pricing to support the things our members love.”
The bottom line? While no one loves paying more, Sam’s Club membership still delivers serious value—especially if you’re feeding a family or stocking up on household essentials. With enhanced benefits for Plus members, that extra $10 a year might just pay for itself in your first shopping trip. And if you’re already a member, you know the savings add up fast. Happy shopping!
