Ingredients
- 4 large onions, sliced
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 Tbs. minced fresh thyme
- ¾ cup beef broth (optional)
- 24 slices French bread, lightly toasted
- 1⅓ cup shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese
Instructions
- In large skillet over medium-high heat, cook onions in butter, covered, 5 min., stirring occasionally. Uncover; stir in sugar, baking soda and thyme. If pan seems dry, add a few Tbs. beef broth or just enough to moisten. Cook another 10 min. or until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Heat oven to 400°F. Place toasts on greased baking sheet. Divide onion mixture evenly among toasts. Sprinkle each with cheese. Bake 5 min. or until cheese is bubbly and starting to brown around edges. Garnish as desired.
