The sandwich shop favorite gets a zingy (and yummy!) upgrade

Football season — or any season, really! — is the perfect time to treat yourself to a hearty sandwich. And nothing its better in that department than a steak sub. Our delicious pepper-steak ‘n’ cheese subs recipe one-ups the classic by dressing it with a quick-prep mustard vinaigrette. The result: A  sub that’s so good everyone will go back for seconds!

This sandwich is easy to make, too. We use boneless, seasoned sirloin steak and cook it quickly in a skillet. Then we add fried onions and peppers that have been marinated in our homemade vinaigrette for maximum flavor. We layer the mixture on hoagie rolls, top it with provolone and broil it until the cheese is nice and melty. Biting into this savory, cheesy zesty sandwich is like a dream come true. Watch our video to see how simple it is to make. Then give it a try when the next game day rolls around.

Line large rimmed baking sheet with foil. In small bowl, whisk together 1 Tbs. oil, vinegar and mustard; reserve. In large nonstick skillet, heat remaining 1 Tbs. oil over medium-high heat. Add onions; cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 10 min.; add peppers. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cover; cook, stirring occasionally, until crisp tender, 5–7 min. Stir in reserved dressing. Transfer to bowl; cover.

Rub both sides of steak with seasoning blend. Coat large nonstick skillet with cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat. Add steak; cook, flipping once, until browned, about 5 min. per side for medium rare or to desired doneness. Remove; let stand 5 min. Transfer to cutting board; slice. Return to skillet with pepper mixture.

Heat broiler. Divide sliced steak and pepper mixture among roll bottoms; top with cheese. Transfer to baking sheet; broil until cheese is melted, 2–3 min. Add roll tops cut side down.
