Plus, find out what other perks come with signing up for a membership with Kroger's rewards program
Though Labor Day sales are ending, there are still plenty of ways to save money—even on everyday essentials. For one day only this week, a popular grocery store chain with locations in 35 states is catering to seniors looking to cut costs. Kroger, which was founded in 1883, has been known to provide special deals for older shoppers in the past and is doing so once again. It’s the perfect chance to stock up on your usual grocery items or try new delicious autumn treats! Keep reading to find out what’s in store for Kroger senior day.
What is Kroger senior discount day?
Senior shoppers will be able to purchase their groceries for less at Kroger this week. On Wednesday, September 3, the supermarket chain is giving eligible customers a limited-time deal. Customers who are 55 years or older can get 5 percent off their total in-store purchases.
The caveat? You have to be a member of Kroger’s free rewards program in order to take advantage. The deal is good for all Kroger locations, however, so you can enjoy the discount at any of its 1,238 stores throughout the U.S..
“At Kroger, we’re proud to support our senior customers with meaningful ways to save,” Jenifer Moore, Kroger corporate affairs manager, told WLWT5. “From personalized digital deals to trusted everyday low prices, we’re always working to help customers stretch their dollars—and this special discount is one more way we’re doing just that.”
How to get the 5 percent senior savings at Kroger

When shopping on September 3, simply let the cashier know that you qualify and provide your Kroger loyalty card or other form of ID. (If you aren’t already a rewards member, there’s still time to sign up on the website. You will just need your name and email address to fill out the form.)
The 5 percent discount will then be applied to your total on food and other household purchases. Note: The deal does not apply to fuel, tobacco, alcohol, prescriptions and gift cards.
If you head to your local Kroger before lunch tomorrow, you may be able to treat yourself to some extra freebies too. WLWT5 reports that stores in the Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, area will have free coffee and pastries available for seniors between 9 and 11 a.m. It’s possible that other locations could have similar treats available during the morning.
Extra perks for Kroger rewards members
Signing up for a Kroger rewards membership means extra perks the rest of the year too. For example, you will be able to earn a point for every $1 you spend. These points can then be used to redeem rewards cash or get discounts on fuel.
Members also access coupons, offers and other weekly sales that are exclusive to those in the loyalty program. According to the company website, this can mean as much as $600 in digital coupon savings each week.
Finally, a loyalty account means the chance to preview the weekly ad early. This will give you an idea of what goods will be on sale so you can plan for even more savings.
Though you can access your membership on the website, you may want to consider downloading the app via Google play or the App Store for more convenience. (The company says it’s one of the easiest ways to find all of the available digital coupons.)
