She Took a Chance on Herself and Stitched a New Future

Woman sewing.

With a childhood passion, the support of a caring sponsor and the courage to try, one young woman is building a life she once only imagined.

Each morning, just as the sun rises over a small Zapotec community in Oaxaca, Mexico, the steady hum of a sewing machine fills the air.

Inside a bright yellow house shaded by almond trees, 21-year-old Dadiva sits surrounded by colorful fabrics, threads and sketches. A cup of coffee rests nearby as she begins another day doing what she once only dreamed of.

But this life didn’t come overnight. It was stitched together with courage, love and the support of the Compassion International program that nurtured her talent from a young age.

A dream begins quietly

As a little girl, Dadiva would sit beneath her mother’s embroidery frame, watching her hands move with precision.

“When my mother got up for a moment, I would sneak in and try to do what she was doing,” Dadiva recalls. “Eventually, she noticed, and that’s when she began teaching me.”

By 11, she was attending sewing workshops at her local Compassion center, learning the basics of embroidery and sewing. With each stitch, her confidence grew, along with her dream of turning her passion into a business.

The gift that changed everything

At 14, a birthday gift from her Compassion sponsor, a sewing machine of her own, gave her the tools to bring her dreams to life.

“I feel very blessed to have my sponsor in my life. In our letters, it feels as if we are great friends who have known each other all our lives.”

With her new machine and the skills she’d learned, Dadiva began creating her own clothing.

Finding courage in the unknown

Starting her business wasn’t easy. Fear often crept in – what if she made a mistake? What if she wasn’t good enough?

One day, a customer brought a design she had never made before. “I almost gave the fabric back,” she admits. “But then I thought, ‘How will I ever learn if I don’t try?’”

She took a deep breath and said yes. That moment changed everything, giving her the confidence to continue growing her business.

Stitching together a future

Today Dadiva runs her own sewing and embroidery business from a workshop in her parents’ home. Racks of her handmade clothing fill the space, each piece a reflection of her creativity, skill and determination.

And she hasn’t forgotten where she came from. Alongside her work, she now helps care for young children at the Compassion center that nurtured her dreams, passing on encouragement just as it was given to her.

“Being in the Compassion program helped me acquire the materials to start my business. Without Compassion, I wouldn’t have learned the basics of embroidery and sewing, and I wouldn’t have met my sponsor, who provided me with a sewing machine. Without all these resources and the support Compassion provided me, I believe I wouldn’t have discovered my passion and potential as a seamstress.”

A life beautifully made
Dadiva’s story is a reminder that dreams don’t have to start big to become extraordinary. Sometimes, they begin quietly, under an embroidery frame, watching someone you love. And sometimes, all it takes is one small moment of courage… to change everything.

You can help a child discover their potential, just like Dadiva.

Through Compassion International, children living in poverty receive the mentorship, encouragement, and resources they need to explore their talents, grow in confidence, and dream bigger. As they are equipped to develop their God-given abilities, they are also empowered—spiritually and practically—to be released from poverty in Jesus’ name. By sponsoring a child today, you can help write the next story of hope, one stitch at a time.
