‘A Game-Changer!’ Ana Castano, 52, Used This Charcoal Secret to Finally Enjoy Pizza Without Gluten Pain
'I feel free!' Ana Castano shares a simple powder that ended 17 years of digestive misery
Giving up bread, pizza, pasta and all my favorite foods forever? despaired Ana Castano. What kind of a life is that?
Seventeen years ago, Ana went to her doctor desperate for answers. She was plagued by intense bloating, stomach pain and fatigue every time she ate. He diagnosed her with a gluten allergy and recommended a strict gluten-free diet.
Determined, Ana dove in—cutting out all gluten, taking probiotics and sipping kombucha to heal her gut. At first, she felt some relief, but it didn’t last. The hardest part? She still longed for the foods she loved most.
One day, after a birthday party where she treated herself to a little piece of cake, Ana had such horrible pain and her stool became so hard that there was blood in it.
I have two choices, Ana concluded. I can have gluten sometimes, and pay for it or I have to just eliminate it from my diet completely.
On a trip to Ibiza, Spain, in 2018, Ana was traveling alone and decided to only try restaurants that served organic food. She went to a pizzeria and told the owner that she had a gluten intolerance. The owner explained that they add charcoal to their pizza dough and it shouldn’t bother her at all.
I can’t believe I have no pain, Ana thought, shocked she was able to enjoy pizza without pain.
How does activated charcoal for gluten intolerance work?
After researching, Ana discovered that organic activated charcoal powder has tiny pores that absorb gas molecules caused by gluten intolerance. It also has a negative charge that binds to irritants in the gut before they trigger discomfort, dramatically reducing bloating and cramping after meals.
Today, Ana carries a small container of activated charcoal in her purse, and if she occasionally enjoys something with gluten, she gives her food a few shakes before eating.
“I feel free and balanced around food,” now says the 52-year-old. “Eating the things I love most without pain is a game-changer!”
3 more surprising health benefits of activated charcoal
Lowers cholesterol
Participants who drank 8 grams of activated charcoal in water 3 times a day saw noticeable drops in LDL, also called “bad” cholesterol, according to a study in The Lancet.
Clears skin
Research found that treating skin with charcoal reduces acne-causing bacterial levels in just two weeks. Its porous structure also binds to oil and dirt to unclog pores.
Drops blood sugar
Studies show fewer blood sugar spikes when charcoal is added to food because its porous structure binds to sugar in the gut before it can enter the bloodstream.
