According to a 2013 study by PwC, the average employee takes about five sick days a year. By those standards, Mike Flowers is definitely not an average worker.
After 35 years in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Police Department, Flowers is retiring with a unique reputation: he has never once called out sick.
The reason why dates back to his childhood.
He attributes this impeccable record to his mom. "My mother always made me get up and go to school. Other than having the measles in the first grade I didn't miss any school days, either," he said.
But he did have a few close calls. The day before his son got married, his gallbladder ruptured and he had to have emergency surgery. Although he missed his son's wedding, he was able to return to work in a "light-duty" position.
