How Goldie Hawn Stays Sunny and Positive While in Lockdown Mode

We can all use some "brain breaks" right about now.

Goldie Hawn is known for having one of the most vibrant and bubbly personalities in Hollywood. As many of us are doing our best to cope with the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis right now, it would be nice if she could just bottle some of that up and share it with the rest of us. Sadly, that kind of magic isn’t possible, but she is doing the next best thing by sharing her tips for staying positive while in lockdown.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Hawn said she’s relying on mood boosters like carrying out acts of kindness for others and a pre-bedtime ritual where she reminds herself of three things that went well that day. “I don’t care if it’s a little crazy thing — it doesn’t matter,” she said. Anything that sparked even a tiny bit of happiness during all the strange and stressful times we’re currently living in is worth acknowledging and celebrating.

Hawn also encourages everyone to dance more (even if we’re not great at it), or at least move around in some way. “Take some music you love and if you can’t dance, go do 10 minutes of jumping jacks. Get yourself all cheered up,” she suggested. “If you can express yourself without being afraid of looking silly — dance like nobody’s watching, right? — I think that’s a beautiful thing.”

The actress has been a longtime advocate for mindful meditation and also recommends something she calls “brain breaks.” She developed the practice with a team of experts for her MindUP program, which helps children dealing with mental health issues. The idea is to take three “brain breaks” a day to focus on mindful meditation for 5 minutes. You can even listen to Hawn guide meditation through a story on the wellness app Moshi. It’s technically designed for kids, but  is just as soothing for adults as it is for little ones.

She admitted to having her own share of glum moments despite her always-perky persona, “But I think I was born with a high set point for happiness. My nature is to always seek the sun. And I think that that’s probably the better part of my nature.”

Here’s hoping we can all embrace even a small amount of the same positive energy Hawn maintains. We already feel a little brighter just seeing her helpful tips!
