There’s never been a better time to be an Outlander fan than right now! Not only has the long-awaited prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, just premiered, pulling fans in with what’s to come, but the Outlander Season 8 trailer recently dropped as well, giving a glimpse into the final chapter of the beloved series. And that’s not all—the first part of the seventh season just hit Netflix, allowing fans of the series to dive back into the more recent events of Claire and Jamie’s story.

If you’re new to the Outlander universe and are feeling tempted to dive in, those seven hefty seasons might seem daunting. However, if you’re looking to dip your toes in first with Blood of My Blood, which right now consists of only the first two episodes (new episodes drop each Friday), don’t feel as though you can’t start if you haven’t yet seen the original series. Here, we break down how the stories connect, what you can expect from the prequel, and whether or not you have to watch Outlander before watching Blood of My Blood

How does ‘Outlander’ connect to ‘Blood of My Blood’?

Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander debuted in 2014. Caitriona Balfe took the lead as Claire Randall, a woman who served as a nurse during WWII and is enjoying a post-war vacation throughout Scotland with her husband, a historian named Frank. While on their trip, Claire stumbled upon an ancient stone circle that transports her to 1743 Scotland, and it’s there where she meets the dashing and brave Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan. Torn between the new world she finds herself in and the life that awaits her back in her time, this historical fantasy series has stood the test of time, and fans are anxiously anticipating the final season, set to hit screens in early 2026.

However, the story doesn’t end there. Last week, the premiere of Outlander: Blood of My Blood shook the world, as fans dove into the story of those who came before Claire and Jamie: Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia, and Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian. While we’ve loved watching the way that Claire and Jamie came to be intertwined, the prequel thus far has revealed that their parents’ stories intertwined as well. While vacationing in Scotland, Claire’s parents get into a car crash, and when they stumble upon the set of familiar stones that transported Claire in the original series, they both are sent back to 1714—though they have yet to locate one another. Now living amongst Claire and Jamie’s parents, only time will tell how these two stories intertwine.

Do I have to watch ‘Outlander’ before watching ‘Blood of My Blood’?

If you’ve watched both Outlander and Blood of My Blood, then you’ll likely enjoy the experience of meeting familiar characters through both periods of time. However, if you’ve never watched Outlander and were interested in watching Blood of My Blood, not to fret. Being that Blood of My Blood is a prequel series and therefore comes before the events of Outlander, you don’t necessarily need the context of the original series to enjoy this new series. It functions just fine as a standalone series, so the order in which you dive into the Outlander universe is really up to you.
