Man Tries Balloon Trick From the Movie ‘Up’ and It Actually Works
Have you ever wanted to “lift off” with a bunch of balloons like the characters did in the hit Disney/Pixar film Up? Well, a very daring British adventurer named Tom Morgan just made that fantasy a reality — while sitting in a camping chair. Yes, really.
Morgan, who owns an adventuring company called The Adventurists (how fitting!), had tried to pull off a balloon-assisted flight many times in the African country Botswana before finally finding success in South Africa instead. The 38-year-old simply inflated 100 balloons over the course of two days, strapped said balloons and himself to the camping chair and let the experience of flying for 15.5 miles happen.
And what an experience it was!
While sitting in the chair, Morgan reached an altitude of 8,000 feet (about a mile and a half) up in the sky. Though he described the adventure as “magical” and “unbelievably cool,” he also admitted to feeling “somewhere between terrified and elated,” according to BBC News.
Yikes! We tend to veer more on the “terrified” side of the spectrum when it comes to risky moves like this, so just watching him do it is thrilling enough for us. We’re more than fine to sit this one out, thank you very much.
On yet another scary-sounding note, he also said that the higher he got up there, the faster his chair accelerated.
“I had to keep my cool and start gradually cutting the balloons,” he said.
But don’t think Morgan’s stopping his balloon-themed escapades now that this trip is done. His next step is to create a competitive helium balloon race in Africa.
Much like the classic Up movie, we’re more than happy just to watch!
