Brad Paisley Stops Concert to Gift 8-Year-Old Fan His Guitar: ‘Learn How to Play This’
The country singer has made a tradition of gifting guitars to kids—and one fan was next
Sometimes, when you’re a kid, all it takes is one person to believe in you, and for one lucky 8-year-old in South Carolina, she can say she’s got none other than country superstar Brad Paisley rooting for her. When Kaydence Dorethy and her mother headed off to the youngster’s very first concert in celebration of the child’s birthday, they hadn’t fully expected that the 52-year-old musician would take notice of their birthday sign and bright pink cowboy hat—but the singer did more than just notice.
The birthday surprise she never expected
While attending Brad Paisley’s Truck Still Works Tour, Kaydence had Lady Luck on her side! At the start of the show, the youngster was lucky enough to snag a guitar pick from Paisley’s opener, Walker Hayes—and if you’ve got yourself a pick, you need something to play! Luckily for Kaydence, the star of the show saw something special in her. Approaching Kaydence and her mom, Paisley took hold of her pink cowboy hat, signing it as a memory for the youngster, but the fun most certainly didn’t end there.
“It’s tough to be a kid, but here’s what got me through it,” the country star said before handing the young girl his signed guitar. “Learn how to play this,” Paisley instructed. For Kaydence and her mom, this moment was one they’ll never forget. At first, the girl thought maybe the singer would hand her a pick the way his opener did, but never did she imagine that she’d be taking home the guitar he was playing. “I thought it was amazing,” Kaydence told NBC News. “I was like, ‘What?! I’m famous!’”

How Brad Paisley got his first guitar as a kid
Paisley learned the guitar at a young age, and with the skill and prowess with which he plays, it isn’t surprising that he got his start so long ago. It was the country star’s grandfather who gifted him his first guitar, and without him, who knows where he would be. “He said, ‘You can play this instrument and three or four hours later, not remember what you were upset about,'” Paisley told ABC News of his grandfather. “And that’s all he wanted. He didn’t care if I was ever, you know, successful. He wanted me to be happy.”
Why Paisley keeps gifting guitars to young fans
While Kaydence was the lucky lady in the South Carolina audience, Paisley has been sharing the love by gifting guitars to youngsters in his audience for quite some time. Just last month, during a performance in Richmond, Va., Paisley handed over the guitar he was playing to a young boy in the audience, with an encouraging, “See you up here in about 10 years, kid!” This tradition dates back years, and Paisley himself even shared a message on Facebook back in 2018 to a young fan he had gifted a guitar to at the time. “To Braden, the boy I gave a guitar to Sunday night in New Hampshire: My hope for you is that it simply brings you joy. Less important are fame, attention, or fortune. Those are secondary. Practice, because the journey is worth it. My grandpa said a guitar can get you through the hard times. He was right. Go play!”
