George Strait Has Been Married to Wife Norma for Over 50 Years—Inside Their Sweet Love Story
The country legend and his wife met in high school and have been married since 1971—here’s their story
When it comes to country music couples, few hold a candle to George Strait and his lovely wife of over 50 years, Norma Strait—and these two lovebirds met when they were just kids! Strait is known for country hits like “Amarillo by Morning,” “Check Yes or No,” “Carrying Your Love with Me” and countless others, and while his career has evolved significantly from the time he and Norma got together, one thing that hasn’t changed is their love for one another. Though no marriage is perfect and as a couple, they’ve had to face the hard times that life has thrown their way, this pair has persevered, and the love they have for each other still inspires.
“Norma and I are so blessed that we found each other 41 years ago and were able to do all of this together, experience this life together, to support each other through everything, good times and bad,” the country crooner said in an interview with People back in 2012. “We do almost everything together. She stayed home until Bubba got out of high school and went to college, but since then she’s come on the road with me too. We love each other and we still like each other. How did George Strait meet Norma?
It was in the halls of their high school where sparks initially flew between George and Norma. Growing up in a small town, their paths had crossed quite a bit, but after their initial first date, as George recalled in an interview with Texas radio station 100.3 The Bull, they didn’t go out again for a long while after that. Luckily, the country singer came to his senses and in 1971, George and Norma eloped in Mexico.
While Strait has remained relatively private about their marriage and relationship over the years, he has never shied away from singing his wife’s praises. In 2024, he accepted the CMA Lifetime Achievement Award at the CMA Awards—and in his speech, he was sure to give thanks to a special lady in the crowd. “My family who are all here tonight—my wife Norma, my son Bubba, his wife Tamara, my grandkids, Harvey and Jilliann. It’s so great to have you all here, but especially Norma, who’s supported me for just shy of 53 years in December,” he gushed.
Do George and Norma Strait have kids?
After getting married, George and Norma welcomed two children—Jenifer and George, who goes by the nickname “Bubba.” When she was just 13 years old, Jenifer was tragically killed in a car accident, and though the singer has rarely talked about the tragedy, it’s clear that her memory lives on within him. “We were blessed to have been able to spend 13 years with our beautiful daughter Jenifer,” he told People.
As for his son Bubba, he took an interest in the rodeo growing up—but Strait’s son shares the same love of music as his father. Over the years, he has lent his voice to several of his father’s songs, and has even helped him write a good handful. Today, Bubba is happily married with two children of his own, growing George and Norma’s crew. It’s safe to say that this duo has built a beautiful life together!
