Key Takeaways

- Matthew Fox will not return for Season 2 of 'The Madison' since his character has died.
- Fox praised Taylor Sheridan as an exceptional writer who astoundingly writes everything himself
Season 1 of Taylor Sheridan’s The Madison officially ended a few days ago, with one of the most impactful moments being the death of Paul Clyburn (Matthew Fox). And since then, everyone has been wondering the same thing: will he come back for the highly anticipated second season? And now, after weeks of pondering that question, we finally have our answer. To learn more about Fox’s role in The Madison Season 2, keep scrolling!
Matthew Fox’s journey in ‘The Madison’ Season 1
Throughout Season 1 of The Madison, Paul is often seen hanging out with his brother Preston (Kurt Russell). They go fishing, hiking and eventually flying in Paul’s plane, which crashes and kills them both. As the season unfolds, flashbacks reveal more and more about the brothers’ relationship, and viewers even learn that Paul’s wife was killed after being run over in a crosswalk.
“I hope you never have to feel it,” Paul tells Preston in the Season 1 finale. “If I could just claw it out of my chest, I’d do it. Believe me, I’ve tried.”
It’s a heartbreaking moment that really showcases just how close the brothers truly are.

“There are a couple of scenes that will let you know why Paul is there, why Preston worries about him and why he’s a bit broken. There’s one scene in particular, at the very end of the season, that I think reveals enough for people to go, ‘Oh, okay, now I get it,’” Fox told Screenrant earlier this month. “It was really challenging to arc that out and find the emotional aspect. I think that in the end, Preston is the only person in the world to whom Paul would reveal his inner pain on that level.”
“That’s the thing I loved most about it; it just made a lot of sense to me that Preston would be that person,” he continued. “Other than that, Paul is walking around the world trying to hide that from people. It just made sense to me.”
Will Matthew Fox be in ‘The Madison’ Season 2?
Since Paul is dead, Fox sadly will not be in Season 2 of The Madison.
“I’m at a point in my life where I’d rather pop in and do something interesting, but I don’t want to dedicate six years of my life to something [again],” Fox explained to The Hollywood Reporter, referring to his time on Party of Five and Lost. “Taylor is an exceptional writer. When I read the scripts, it really hit me where it hurts, and also made me laugh.”
“[I] appreciated Taylor’s authenticity of the world. He offers a lot as a storyteller, not just on a dialogue level but there’s so much subtext,” the actor continued. “I don’t know how he does everything that he’s doing. It’s mind-boggling. I’ve worked on other series where there’s a creator and a writers room where a lot of people are involved, and he writes everything. It’s really kind of astounding.”

And that interview isn’t the only time Fox has praised Sheridan and the show. When speaking with Woman’s World earlier this year, the actor called The Madison “a lot of fun.”
“We had a lot of laughs. And we had a lot of laughs in scenes. These two brothers don’t see each other that much, and so Madison is the place that they get to spend time together,” Fox continued. “Paul would love it if Preston came and spent more time on the Madison with him, but he cherishes the moments that he gets with his older brother. Paul is carrying a certain weight of his own loss underneath, but that’s not the kind of thing that, when you’re hanging out with your brother for [only] a couple of weeks, you’re going to bring up. You’re gonna do everything you can to stay in that joy and just enjoy that person that you miss and that you love.”
