Jamie Roy Was Almost Cast in ‘Outlander’?! The Surprising Reason Why They Let Him Go
Plus, a look at ‘Outlander’ Season 8!
Fans have been waiting patiently for Jamie Roy’s portrayal of Jamie Fraser’s father in the all-new Outlander prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood, with many having high hopes for his role as Brian Fraser, but did you know that this hunky Scottish actor almost appeared on the original Outlander? During a panel at San Diego’s 2025 Comic-Con, it was revealed that the Blood of My Blood actor was almost cast opposite Sam Heughan—but it was his close resemblance to the actor that stood in the way of him getting the role. Luckily, things worked out in the end! Here, all about the ironic story that ultimately led him to the role that would change his life!
‘Blood of My Blood’ Comic-Con panel reveals casting details
Sam Heughan has been portraying Jamie Fraser on screen for years now, and ironically, Jamie Roy, who will now play Jamie Fraser’s father in the prequel series, was almost cast in Outlander as well, though the part he was set to potentially play was not revealed.
“We had actually started to cast him for a role in Outlander,” said showrunner Maril Davis during a Blood of my Blood panel at Comic-Con this past weekend. “All the writers and I were like, ‘Wow, he looks a lot like Sam. That’s so weird. Maybe we should hold him for the prequel.'” However, at the time, the prequel was merely an idea that had yet to be given the green light. “I was talking to Karen Bailey [SVP, Original Programming, Starz] and she was like, ‘God, he looks a lot like Sam. Should we save him for the prequel?’ So, here we are.”

Luckily, the stars aligned for this perfect casting, and based on looks alone, we can already tell that Roy will capture the Fraser charm and valor we’ve grown familiar with over the show’s countless seasons. Over the last few years, Jamie Roy has been building his resume with countless films and series that include Meeting You, Meeting Me (2024), Condor’s Nest (2023), Squeaky Clean Mysteries: Hazardous Duty (2022), Flowers and Honey (2021) and more, but it’s his role as Brian Fraser that we’re anticipating makes this actor a household name.
More ‘Outlander’ news revealed at Comic-Con
Outlander fans got the Season 8 updates they had been craving during the panels that took place at Comic-Con over the weekend—but the news regarding Jamie Fraser’s fate was far from what we were expecting! In a first look at the show’s final season, Jamie is seen reading a book written by Frank Randall, Claire’s first husband, and in it, he warns of the death of Jamie Fraser, causing tons of emotions from fans.
“I don’t think I took a single breath while watching this reel. I can’t believe this is really coming to an end,” wrote one user in the comments of the Instagram post sharing the preview. “Although I know all of these flashback scenes, I still get goosebumps,” shared another. The final season is set to hit screens in early 2026, and we can hardly wait! Here, a peek at what’s in store!
