Michelle Pfeiffer has been considered one of Hollywood’s most beautiful and talented women for four decades. The actress has continued to keep busy into her 60s, as she most recently starred in the Prime Video Christmas movie Oh. What. Fun. and will next be seen as the lead in the highly anticipated Yellowstone spinoff, The Madison.

Offscreen, the Fabulous Baker Boys actress has been married to TV writer and producer David E. Kelley, a fellow power player in the entertainment world, for over 30 years, and prior to that, she was married to Peter Horton, an actor she met early in her career. Read on to learn all about Pfeiffer’s A-list love life, from her long marriage to the ’80s costar romance that caused a scandal.

Michelle Pfeiffer’s dramatic first marriage: From meeting in acting class to saving her from a cult

Michelle Pfeiffer met her first husband, Thirtysomething star Peter Horton, in an acting class before she was famous. The couple married in 1981, and they worked together when Horton directed her in a 1985 Afterschool Special. In 1987, Horton directed a segment of the sci-fi spoof film Amazon Women on the Moon in which they costarred as a couple.

Pfeiffer and Horton’s marriage had a dramatic start, as the What Lies Beneath star got drawn into a cult as an aspiring actress. Pfeiffer didn’t fully realize what was happening until her husband just so happened to be acting in a movie about a cult, and it was only then that she was able to see the parallels between the story he was telling onscreen and what she was going through in her own life, allowing her to break free from a dangerous situation.

Pfeiffer’s first marriage ended in 1988, and looking back, she told Interview magazine, “I was 22. I think my husband and I were both too young, and as we started growing up, our needs changed. We’ve always been close, even up to the separation, which was very difficult on both of us because we have never stopped caring for each other. It was, in that sense, really difficult because we didn’t have the anger to hide behind, the anger that covers up all the pain.”

Life imitates art on the ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ set

During her seven-year first marriage, Pfeiffer went from an unknown to an A-lister, and during the making of the steamy 1988 period piece Dangerous Liaisons, she had a brief affair with her costar, John Malkovich. Pfeiffer and Horton divorced that same year. The actress hasn’t spoken publicly about her real-life liaison. In a recent interview, Malkovich called her “someone I valued greatly as a colleague” and said she was “incredibly fair” in their relationship, while he was not.

When Michelle Pfeiffer dated two different Batman actors

Pfeiffer was briefly linked to Val Kilmer, her costar in her 1985 Afterschool Special, and she shared a photo of them in the show on Instagram following his death in 2025.

In 1992, Pfeiffer famously played Catwoman in Batman Returns, which starred her former boyfriend, Michael Keaton. Keaton was rumored to have originally wanted a different actress in Pfeiffer’s role due to their romantic history, but their chemistry was undeniable and she was ultimately cast as Gotham City’s femme fatale. At the time, she said, “It was great actually working with him, having had a history, because I was really out of my element. Also, the fact that he had done this kind of picture before and I didn’t know what to expect. I felt really comfortable with him. I felt really safe with him. I could go to him and say, ‘Why am I feeling so awful? I don’t know what’s going on.’ And he would explain it to me. ‘I know. I went through it on the first one.’”

Coincidentally, Kilmer replaced Keaton as Batman in 1995’s Batman Forever, which means Pfeiffer has dated two actors who’ve played the iconic superhero.

An unexpected romance with Fisher Stevens

From 1989 to 1992, Pfeiffer dated Fisher Stevens, her costar in a stage production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. At the time, the blonde beauty admitted that she and the character actor had something of an opposites-attract dynamic, explaining to Rolling Stone, “He’s exhausting. He lives out of a suitcase; he loves to travel. He’s comfortable wherever he is, and I’m SO the opposite. I’d never leave my house in Los Angeles if it weren’t for my work and for him. I’m a creature of habit, really; I don’t like change much. And that’s why I chose him. I know that’s why I chose him.”

When Michelle Pfeiffer adopted her daughter and met her husband in the same year

Michelle Pfeiffer met her husband, David E. Kelley, on a blind date in 1993 and had an instant connection, leading them to marry later that year. At the time, the actress was in the process of adopting her daughter, Claudia, and was choosing to raise her as a single mom, but fate had other plans, and Kelley officially became Claudia’s adoptive father.

While it might sound complicated to balance adopting a child and meeting your future husband, Pfeiffer said that not only was the opposite true, but this unique situation made their relationship stronger, explaining to Good Housekeeping magazine, “The adoption process was already in motion when he and I met. So when she came, he and I had only been together for about two months. So we had this child with us right away, and most people don’t have that. But I really got to see him in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion. And, you know, we were both adults. It’s not like we were kids anymore, and we were both at the age where we were ready to start a family. So we both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us as a couple. We had something else to focus on. It was sort of perfectly timed. I mean, it’s a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn’t always the best way.”

Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley’s 32 years of wedded bliss

Pfeiffer and Kelley had a son, John Henry, in 1994, and the couple became grandparents for the first time in 2024. David E. Kelley, the son of Hall of Fame hockey coach Jack Kelley, is one of the most prolific figures in modern TV, as he’s created shows like Chicago Hope, The Practice, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal and Big Little Lies, to name just a few.

While Pfeiffer has intentionally chosen not to work with her husband too often, the power couple has collaborated a handful of times. Pfeiffer made a cameo on an episode of Kelley’s show Picket Fences in 1995 and she starred in the 1996 film To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday, which he wrote. This year, she’ll play the title character’s mom in Margo’s Got Money Troubles, an upcoming series created by her husband and adapted from the popular novel of the same name.

The Scarface actress has always spoken fondly of Kelley, praising him for consistently writing complex female characters and telling Parade, “I never take him for granted. I’ve never met a person who has more integrity than my husband. I respect that. There’s his humor and intelligence, too, and he’s really cute, all those things—but if you don’t respect your partner, you’ll get sick of him.” In a sweet November 2025 Instagram post celebrating their anniversary, Pfeiffer wrote “Lucky in love for 32 years,” and it’s clear that the actress’ personal drama is behind her and the luck will only continue.
