Why ‘General Hospital’ Star Jonathan Jackson Is Stepping Away—And Who’s Filling in for Him
Jonathan Jackson is already missed—but fans will see him again soon enough!
It isn’t unusual in the soap opera world for a character to be replaced with another actor either temporarily or permanently for the sake of a story’s continuity, and as of February 18, General Hospital is giving that treatment to none other than Lucky Spencer, who has been played by Jonathan Jackson since 1993. The 42-year-old actor has been portraying the son of famed General Hospital couple Luke and Laura for several years, and while his absence will certainly be felt, fans of the show can rest assured that his character is in good hands.
In Jackson’s absence, Guy Wilson will take on the role. Soap fans may recognize this familiar face from his part on Days of Our Lives from 2014 to 2015, where he brought to life the character of Will Horton, though he tragically met his end when his character was killed. In true soap fashion, it was eventually revealed that he in fact lived through the ordeal, though the role was recast and played by another actor. After all, no one is ever really dead in the soap world!
Why is Jonathan Jackson taking a break from ‘General Hospital’?
Horton will be taking on the role of Lucky for only a “handful of episodes,” and Jackson has already returned to filming, ensuring viewers that he’s a face that will be seen in the near future, according to Soap Opera Digest. Though the reason for his temporary departure hasn’t been shared, Jackson is certainly a busy guy. In addition to his General Hospital role, he also brought to life the character of Avery Barkely on the hit series Nashville—an opportunity he was able to pursue thanks to another hiatus he had taken from the famous soap back in 2011.

It wasn’t until last summer that he became a face we started seeing regularly on the series again, something he had announced to his Instagram account last June that had General Hospital fans buzzing. “I’m super excited and can’t wait to dig in and see what’s going on in Port Charles,” Jackson said in the post he shared announcing his return. “Excited to see Genie Francis and so many others. I just wanted to say thank you to all of the fans over the years. Your persistence and love have certainly played a part in all this.”

And his return has certainly been welcomed with open arms—and that being said, his brief absence has been felt by fans around the world! On his most recent post shared to Instagram, many took to the comments to express how much they miss seeing him on their screen, even if it has only been a brief and temporary goodbye! “Can’t wait to see you on the GH screen again. This short period was just too much without you!,” wrote one passionate fan. “I was sad you weren’t in those scenes yesterday. I keep waiting for this build up so I was bummed, but glad to hear you’ll be back soon. Nothing wrong with the other actor, just love you on GH! Forever fan!,” shared another. Luckily, fans can expect to see Jackson back on their screens very soon!
