Before ‘Landman,’ Demi Moore and Billy Bob Thornton Costarred in ‘Indecent Proposal’—a Look Back at the 1993 Hit’s Cast
One star doesn't even remember meeting the other—find out who!
Long before Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore starred together in Taylor Sheridan’s hit Texas-based oil drama Landman, they were in the fan favorite 1993 film Indecent Proposal, which followed a billionaire after he offers a married couple $1 million to sleep with the wife. However, despite the fact that the film made $266.6 million at the worldwide box office, Thornton claims that Moore “didn’t remember” him. We, however, did and decided that it was time to catch up with the cast of Indecent Proposal and discover what they do remember about their time on the film. Read on for more.
Robert Redford as John Gage

Robert Redford is a beloved actor who got his start in the 1960s and has since become one of the most recognizable figures in Hollywood. His most notable films include The Chase (1966), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Great Gatsby (1974), All the President’s Men (1976), The Natural (1984), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). In Indecent proposal, he plays John Gage, the billionaire who pays a million dollars to sleep with a man’s wife.
“That was a bit of a joyride. I thought it was definitely a wonderful part. And since it didn’t require that much time, as you can tell, it enabled me to edit A River Runs Through It simultaneously,” Redford told Interview Magazine in 2015. “I was very intrigued by working with a director [Adrian Lyne] with such a strong visual sense. Curiously, directing my own films has made me more tolerant and patient. I’ve always been an extremely impatient actor—you know, not too many takes, and I don’t want to spend too much time on the set. Waiting around drove me nuts. But now I’m much more sympathetic to a director’s struggle.”
Redford is 89 years old and has four kids as well as several grandchildren. He has been married to Sibylle Szaggars since 2009.
Demi Moore as Diana Murphy

Former Brat Pack member turned Oscar nominee Demi Moore is no stranger to the screen. Her acting credits include General Hospital (1982 to 1984), St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), Ghost (1990), Disclosure (1994), G.I. Jane (1997), Mr. Brooks (2007), The Substance (2024) and Landman (2024 to present). She plays Diana Murphy in Incident Proposal, the married woman who sleeps with John Gage (Redford), a role for which she recently revealed on CBS’s Sunday Morning that she lost 60 pounds for by biking.
“I think [Scout] was, like, five or six months old when we were shooting,” Moore said. “I was feeding her through the night, getting up in the dark with a trainer with a headlamp, biking all the way to Paramount, even on location where we were shooting, then shooting a full day, which is usually a 12-hour day, and then starting all over again. “
“Even just the idea of what I did to my body, it’s so crazy, so ridiculous,” she continued. “But you look back and you kind of go, ‘Did it really matter that much?’ Probably not. But at the time, I made it mean everything.”
Moore is 62 years old and has three kids with ex-husband Bruce Willis. She is also now a grandma.
Woody Harrelson as David Murphy

Woody Harrelson is a 64-year-old American actor best known for Cheers (1985 to 1993), The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Zombieland (2009), Now You See Me (2013), True Detective (2014), Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), and The Hunger Games franchise (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015). He plays David Murphy, Diana’s (Moore) husband, in Incident Proposal.
“My mom was pretty psyched,” Harrelson said of his casting in an interview with Role Recall, per Yahoo Entertainment. “She didn’t come to visit me on set much, [but] when Robert Redford was in the movie, she came to set for sure. She was like a little girl, like a little schoolgirl. It was fantastic.”
Harrelson has been married twice and has three kids.
Billy Bob Thornton as Day Tripper

Billy Bob Thornton is an Oscar winning actor best known for The Outsiders (1990), Hearts Afire (1992 to 1995), Sling Blade (1996), A Simple Plan (1998), Bandits (2001), Love Actually (2003), Bad Santa I & II (2003 and 2016 ) Fargo (2014 to 2017), Goliath (2016 to 2021) and Landman (2024 to present). He doesn’t have a huge role in Indecent Proposal; however, due to his relationship with Moore, we had to include him.
“Redford was very good to me and I only had a couple of scenes in that movie, but I was there for six weeks because it took a long time to get this thing shot,” Thorton said, per the New York Post. “[Redford] brought me, I think — I can’t remember — it was like a Newsweek or Time magazine, one of those. There was an article in it about a movie I co-wrote with Tom Epperson and co-starred in called One False Move, and this was a glowing review. He said, ‘Look, have you seen this?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ’Read that.’ And I sat there next to him, and he said, ‘Keep doing that. They’re going to come at you with offers now. Don’t go off and play a superhero or something and make money.’”
Thornton is 69 years old and has been married six times. He has four children.
