Josh Brolin Hints at Working With ‘Yellowstone’s’ Taylor Sheridan Again on ‘Sicario 3’: ‘So Cool’
Filled with high stakes plots and a strong main character, this film is way different than the Duttons
When we think of Taylor Sheridan, we often think of his hit western shows Yellowstone and Landman; however, the 55-year-old writer has created several other shows and movies, including a 2015 FBI thriller called Sicario, which starred Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin—the former of which, recently shared that a highly anticipated third film might be in the works. We have everything you need to know about a potential third Sicario film, including what Sheridan has to say about the feature film franchise below.
What’s ‘Sicario’ about?
Sicario—which means hitman in Spanish—was originally released in theaters in 2015. It followed federal agent Matt Graver (Brolin) after he was tasked with trying to eliminate the drug war and the U.S.-Mexico border. It was then followed up with a sequel in 2018 entitled Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which followed a very similar plot, just with some new cast members.
“Here’s the thing about the film that’s worth noting: The landscape is cartels and the drug war. But that’s not really what the movie’s about. It’s really a broader philosophical question of the rule of law. Who adheres to it, and do the ends justify the means? What is the consequence of a consumer nation and that appetite?” Sheridan told Variety about the film back in 2015.

“Those are the things that I was really exploring, and this, coincidentally, provides the perfect landscape to explore all of them. So there was a contractor with a defense intelligence agency that I spent quite a bit of time talking to, as I understood how one could manipulate law to allow certain things to take place. Now, obviously, it’s an imagined circumstance. I’m not insinuating that our government is sending out SEAL teams to strike at people in northern New Mexico, but if they were doing that, this is how it would be done.”
Following the release in 2018, Sheridan decided to leave that world behind and go into the wild western world of Montana—until now.
What to know about a potential third ‘Sicario’ film
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin shared that he had heard some rumors of Sheridan creating a third Sicario film.
“I mentioned at some point, I don’t know, just to be contrary, I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s [Sicario 3] never going to happen,’” the Avengers: Endgame said. “And then the producers showed up, and Molly [Smith] and you know, ‘That’s not true.’ Which is fine…And I just heard recently that it’s very, very real. So, cool.”

Since the release of the original Sicario, Brolin has gone on to work on things like Dune: Part One and Two (2021/2024), Outer Range (2022 to 2024) and Weapons (2025). He is 57 years old and has been married to his wife, Kathryn Boyd Brolin, since 2016.
‘Sicario 3’ release date
As of publication, there is no news on when Sicario 3 will be filmed or released. However, if you simply cannot wait to catch up with Matt Graver, you can always stream the first film on Netflix and the second on AppleTV+.
