Nothing is guaranteed in your favorite TV shows, especially when beloved characters are pitted against and fighting a dangerous species of sea creatures set on destroying all of humankind. And Jemma Redgrave, who stars as the head of UNIT Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, or Kate Stewart, in the Whoniverse, isn’t so sure everybody will be safe from the attack.

The new Doctor Who spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, is bringing back the beloved character, but nobody’s fate is yet determined. With the Sea Devils back from the depths of the ocean and ready to reclaim the planet as their own once more, nothing is certain for those in the Whoniverse. See what Redgrave said about her character’s future and whether she thinks Kate can survive this next chapter.

Kate Stewart returns to the Whoniverse

Redgrave has appeared in multiple Doctor Who series over the years, beginning her reign as Kate Stewart in 2012. Her character has faced a number of dangers over the years. She even died in the 2024 finale of Doctor Who, before being resurrected. So it’s safe to say she’s been through the ringer!

As for the upcoming spinoff, Redgrave isn’t certain Kate can make it through another battle.

If she survives this series, I don’t know where she can go next…” Redgrave told RadioTimes.com of her character. ”But I’ve had a most extraordinary time and journey with this character and through different series of Doctor Who and now through this series. And every time I get the call, it feels like another gift. Long may it last.”

The War Between the Land and the Sea sees Redgrave return to her position as UNIT leader as she and her team try to reason with the Sea Devils. The plot of the series reads: “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”

The character of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart was first introduced in 1995 in the Doctor Who spinoff film Downtime, though she was portrayed by a different actress. Beverley Cressman played that role in the film and the character was later brought back by Redgrave in the series in 2012.

Kate Lethbridge-Stewart has been a beloved character ever since she was introduced, and Redgrave’s portrayal is one fans adore, so to see her back will be exciting for diehard Doctor Who fans.

One of the writers of The War Between the Land and the Sea, Pete McTighe, spoke about what Kate means to Doctor Who fans and her upcoming arc.

The character of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart… I think if you’re a huge fan of Doctor Who and you know that legacy character and you love that character like I do, I think you’ll be very surprised about the journey that she goes on through the show,” show writer McTighe said. “Her character arc, in particular for Doctor Who fans, is probably the most surprising.”
