HBO Orders ‘American Blue’ Pilot Starring Milo Ventimiglia—Here’s What We Know About the New Cop Drama
The 'This Is Us' star returns to TV in a gritty police drama pilot that promises compelling storytelling
There’s nothing wrong with a soapy police procedural. As a matter of fact, we love it! However, every once in a while, we get an itch for something just a little bit grittier, and with HBO having ordered a pilot for an all-new police drama, American Blue, we think it might just deliver. American Blue comes from Jeremy Carver, Supernatural showrunner, and, should it be ordered to series, is set to follow a model similar to HBO’s current medical hit, The Pitt. Here, read everything we know about this cop drama, who is set to star and what’s next.
‘American Blue’ promises drama and deep storytelling
At the end of 2025, Deadline reported that HBO Max would be spearheading two new drama series, American Blue being one of them. At the heart of this new series is a character named Brian “Milk” Milkovich from the town of Joliet, Illinois. Brian returns to his hometown, joining their troubled police department while simultaneously embarking on a personal journey of his own. “It’s very much in that vein where you really get to know these police officers and understand that they are members of this community that they’re serving. But also it is very much in the streets, on their feet, doing the job in 2025,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Originals at HBO Max.
If American Blue goes all the way, HBO has revealed that the format may follow that of The Pitt, which consists of longer seasons that allow for deeper storytelling. “As with The Pitt, our goal of longer seasons will allow viewers to sink deeply into this world across multiple episodes and to return to it on an annual basis. We can’t wait for Jeremy Carver’s vision for American Blue to come to life,” said Aubrey in a statement as reported by Variety.
Who is starring in ‘American Blue’?
Taking the lead in American Blue as Brian “Milk” Milkovich is none other than Milo Ventimiglia, 48, known for his iconic television roles in hit series such as This Is Us, Gilmore Girls, Heroes and more. The pilot is set to be directed by David Ayer, who has had quite a bit of experience with crime and action dramas. Ayer wrote the screenplay for Training Day, the 2001 film that earned Denzel Washington an Academy Award. Additionally, he has directed films like Suicide Squad (2016) and Fury (2014).

“We are thrilled to have Milo and David join American Blue,” said Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs at Warner Bros. Television, as reported by Variety. “Milo’s dynamic presence on-screen and David’s keen eye are a perfect match for the complex, character-driven drama that Jeremy created. We look forward to seeing this trio bring Milk’s journey to life.”
With HBO pursuing more long-form series like The Pitt, American Blue has the potential to become your next must-watch obsession. There’s something so compelling about watching Milo Ventimiglia bring depth and heart to complex characters, and we can’t wait to see him tackle this gritty new role. If the pilot gets picked up to series, we’ll be counting down the days until we can settle in with this character-driven drama that promises to keep us hooked episode after episode.
When will ‘American Blue’ premiere?
While fans are eager to see Milo Ventimiglia trade his This Is Us charm for a badge, American Blue is currently in the pilot phase following its official order by HBO on January 30, 2026. Because the project is a Max Original, viewers will be able to stream the gritty cop drama exclusively on the Max streaming platform. While an exact premiere date hasn’t been set, the series is expected to follow an accelerated production schedule.
