See How These ‘Outlander’ Characters Compare to Their Younger Selves in ‘Blood of My Blood’
Tell us: Which series do you like more?
When it comes to prequels, there’s nothing better than getting to know the origin stories of your favorite characters, and with the all-new Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood, we’ve not only been able to dive into the love story of Claire and Jamie’s parents, but we’ve also been introduced to the younger versions of some of our favorite characters we’ve gotten to know in the original series. Blood of My Blood chronicles the love stories of Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie and how their families and circumstances keep them apart despite their feelings for one another, as well as Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, Claire’s time-traveling parents, who are trying to find their way back to one another after slipping back into 18th-century Scotland.
While we’ve certainly loved getting to know Brian, Ellen, Julia and Henry thus far, as these new characters have only been spoken about in the original series, there’s another element of the prequel series that’s even more special, and that’s getting to know prominent Outlander characters as young men and women. Familiar faces like Dougal MacKenzie, Ned Gowan and Mrs. Fitz all have played an important role in the original Outlander, but learning their backstories and seeing the younger portrayals on screen has been an absolute treat for longtime fans of the series. Here, a Blood of My Blood and Outlander character comparison. What do you think about these casting choices?
Dougal MacKenzie

Dougal MacKenzie was a character we instantly got to know in Outlander and his Blood of My Blood origin story is already proving to be complex as we get to see the ways in which he differs from his brother, Colum. Additionally, his ambitions at this point in time are threatening the romance brewing between Ellen and Brian.
Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser

Sweet, sweet Murtagh! We got to know this character in Outlander as Jamie’s fiercely loyal godfather, and in Blood of My Blood, our heart breaks for him as he pines over Ellen, unaware that it’s his second cousin Brian who has stolen her heart.
Colum MacKenzie

We know that Colum eventually becomes laird of Clan MacKenzie, but learning of his origin story and the accident that led to his condition painted a fuller picture of his life.
Jacosta MacKenzie Cameron

Fans of Outlander know of Jacosta as Jamie’s aunt who lost her vision and married four different men, but in Blood of My Blood, we see another side of her as her competitive nature is revealed, especially when it comes to matters involving her sister, Ellen.
Ned Gowan

Ned Gowan proved to be an asset in Outlander, and seeing his origin story has been interesting thus far. His seemingly close bond with Ellen mirrors that he shared with Claire in the original series.
Mrs. Fitz

We got to know Mrs. Fitz in the first season of Outlander, and in the prequel, we see her unique relationship with Jamie’s mom, Ellen, as her housekeeper and close friend.
