Did ‘Ransom Canyon’ Just Reference Taylor Sheridan’s Four Sixes Ranch?

When Yellowstone concluded back in 2024, there was a cowboy-shaped hole left in our hearts—but soon enough, Ransom Canyon filled it. Last April, the debut season of the Texas rancher drama hit Netflix, introducing viewers to hunky cowboy Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel), angsty drifter Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher) and talented girl-next-door Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly). The first season took these characters on a dramatic journey, and with Season 2 having just debuted last week, that journey continued. 

At the start of the season, Staten is struggling with his father’s presence and control over the Double K Ranch, the former politician having a complete lack of understanding about its day-to-day operations. In Season 2, Episode 2, which aired on July 23, Sam Kirkland (Brett Cullen) and his son Staten engage in one of many intense conversations leading up to a local cattle auction—but did you happen to catch his brief Taylor Sheridan reference? Could Ransom Canyon and Yellowstone exist within the same universe? Here, we break it down.

A ‘Ransom Canyon’ x Taylor Sheridan crossover

In Episode 2, Staten and his father Sam get into a spirited argument when Sam expresses his plans to purchase Yancy Grey’s cattle for a cheap price. At this point in time, Yancy is in a tough financial position, for he has a baby on the way with Ellie. Meanwhile, his wife is trying to manipulate him leading up to their divorce. Before this, when Staten asks his father what his plan is at the auction, Sam replies by saying, “Going to buy a sh—t load of cattle, turn the Double K into the Four Sixes.” 

If you’re anything like us, that name immediately set off alarms, and true fans of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan, and the world he’s cultivated both on and off the screen caught the reference immediately. The Four Sixes Ranch (6666 Ranch) is located in Guthrie, Texas and is owned by Yellowstone creator and real-life cowboy Taylor Sheridan. Today, the ranch spans 260,000 acres, and according to their website, “Legendary Quarter Horses and Superior Angus Cattle are hallmarks of the Four Sixes. The ranch not only offers state-of-the-art reproductive services and a full range of equine veterinary services but also stands to the public some of the most well-respected Quarter Horse stallions in the industry. In addition, the ranch’s elite broodmare band produces some of the best ranch and sale horses available anywhere.”

So where does Taylor Sheridan come in? Back in 2020, the great-granddaughter of the ranch’s founder passed away, prompting Sheridan and his wife to purchase the land. While Four Sixes is an active, working ranch, it also served as the setting of several episodes of Yellowstone and played an important role in several storylines. Once Yellowstone ended, spinoffs including Marshals and Dutton Ranch hit screens, and another that’s been announced is one called 6666, taking place at the famed ranch and likely following the beloved character of Jimmy Hurdstrom. 

With all that in mind, can we assume that Yellowstone and Ransom Canyon exist within the same fictional universe? Is there a chance Staten Kirkland and Jimmy Hurdstrom will cross paths at some point in the future? Does Staten Kirkland know who Taylor Sheridan is?
