Countless familiar faces in both the film and music industry were first introduced to the world on this reality series, and if you loved it then, you’re going to love the new and improved modern take on the series. Here, read all about the new Star Search—plus, allow us to jog your memory on the stars we love today who actually appeared on this show.

‘Star Search’ reboot coming to Netflix: What to know

The new reboot of Star Search, which will stream live weekly on Netflix, takes the excitement and undeniable talent we loved from the original series and gives it a modern upgrade that’s interactive, fast-paced and gripping to watch. The original series, which premiered in 1983 and aired until 1995, highlighted male and female singers, teen singers, vocal groups, dancers, comedians and more. While the specific categories and breakdown of the upcoming reboot haven’t yet been revealed, the official casting notice for the series called for vocalists, dance troupes, comedy and variety acts in both adult and junior categories. While these categories might sound similar to the original series, what sets this reboot apart is the new, interactive voting element that allows voters to boost their favorites in real time. The details regarding how live voting works haven’t yet been revealed, but viewers at home who cast their votes will be playing a direct and immediate role in participants’ journeys.

Who is hosting and judging the ‘Star Search’ reboot?

Anthony Anderson, comedian and actor known for his work on black-ish, will be hosting the new installment of this series. “I’m super excited to host this new chapter of Star Search and to introduce such an iconic format to a whole new generation, especially on a global stage like Netflix,” he told Tudum. “The range of talent we’re going to see is going to blow you away, and I can’t wait for audiences to experience all the performances, surprises and sheer excitement that this new era of Star Search will deliver.” He continued, “The live voting feature is a total game-changer. Knowing that fans from all over the world can cast their votes in real time adds a whole new layer of excitement and participation to the mix. It’s like we’re all part of the show and get to be one of the judges.”

Which celebrities were discovered on the original ‘Star Search’?

Younger generations might not realize it, but Star Search served as a jumping-off point for countless entertainers who went on to have wildly successful careers. Beyoncé, for example, competed with a group known as Girls Tyme in 1993 at just 12 years old—a group which also included Kelly Rowland. Another famous singer who put it all out there was Justin Timberlake—long before his Mickey Mouse Club and NSYNC fame. Other contestants included artists like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and music group Sawyer Brown. As for comedians, Dave Chappelle, Martin Lawrence and even Adam Sandler gave the series a shot.
