A mysterious plane crash set against a snowy Alaskan backdrop? Count us in! In the brand new Apple TV+ show The Last Frontier, that’s exactly what happens, and trust us when we say the plane crash appears to be only the beginning of this drama. Below, we have rounded up everything you need to know about the show, including cast info and when you can expect to stream it.

What to know about ‘The Last Frontier’

The Last Frontier will follow a United States marshal named Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke)  as he investigates why a plane filled with dozens of inmates crashed in the middle-of-nowhere Alaska.

“The show is Con Air meets The Fugitive,” creator Jon Bokenkamp told Esquire earlier this year. “It’s grounded in ’90s action thrillers. That’s what we wanted to do. We’re trying to give audiences something fun and come together for a thrill ride. That was our inspiration.”

“I lived in a very rural community. I understand that better than the city,” he continued. “The real impetus was wanting to tell a story that was fun, escapist, not steeped in politics. Just a roller coaster of a ride… I think of movies like Point Break or Enemy of the State. Popcorn movies that an audience could come together and go on a ride. … Oftentimes it’s absurd and goes to places where it might not be totally grounded in reality, but that’s the fun of it.”

The show itself was actually filmed in Alaska, which, according to Clarke, wasn’t easy.

“As anyone who worked on The Revenant will testify, shooting in the snow and needing snow for a long period of time, chasing snow, is challenging. Preparation and logistics on this were huge. Minus-twenty-five degrees Celsius, then you add on wind chill nights, it gets rough,” he told Decider in August of this year. “Seven-minute non-stop fight sequences with helicopters and burning airplanes on the frozen tundra will set a level of required intensity and commitment. Harsh elements demand focus, professionalism and bring reality. Sam Hargrave and his stunt/camera team have all these qualities in spades. I loved working with them so much.”

He also shared his favorite part about the plot, saying, “We were most excited about trying to build a story around a manhunt—not a search for one fugitive, but a manhunt where we get to chase down an assortment of incredibly desperate, reckless, criminally insane fugitives.

That was the initial spark. But I think the show really came to life when we realized it wasn’t only about the fugitives, but the people whose lives are directly impacted by those fugitives.”

Get to know the ‘The Last Frontier’ cast

The Last Frontier will star people like Simone Kessell, Haley Bennett, Dominic Cooper, Alfre Woodard and Rusty Schwimmer.

As mentioned above, it will also star Clarke, whose previous credits include Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and Terminator Genisys (2015). He will portray Marshal Frank Remnick in the show, a role that is expected to be the lead one.

“The downed plane and convicts at large are Frank’s responsibility,” Clarke said in that same Esquire interview. “We follow Frank, stumbling through the chaos that ensues. He becomes a useful pawn in a larger plot that is forced to confront a shameful, wrongful past as history appears to repeat itself.”

Bokenkamp also added onto that, saying, “Family and community are important to Frank. He is somebody who sees the world changing around him, and changing faster than he’s comfortable with. There are things in the world that he doesn’t understand. This catastrophe forces him to confront those questions. There’s a sensitivity and nuance [to him]. He’s a bit of an open wound and he’s very good at hiding that.”

‘The Last Frontier’ release date

The first two episodes of The Last Frontier will be released on Friday, October 10. Following that, the episodes will air weekly every Friday, up until December 5.

If you can’t wait that long, though, or simply just want to see these characters in action, you can watch the trailer below.
