Read on for more.
What we know so far about ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ Season 2
In Season 1 of The Last Thing He Told Me–which was based on the bestselling Laura Dave novel—Hannah Hall (Jennifer Garner) is given no choice but to try and bond with her stepdaughter, Bailey (Angourie Rice), after husband Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) mysteriously disappears. The season ends with Hannah and Bailey bonding and viewers learning that Owen was actually in the witness protection program, resulting in his staying hidden.
“In the end, Hannah chooses Bailey, and Bailey chooses Hannah,” Rice told Today in May of 2023. “So that, to me, was such a beautiful story about what motherhood and daughterhood, if that’s a word, can be.”
“You can find joy and comfort and a happy future,” she continued. “Even if it’s not the one you thought you were going to have five years ago, it’s the place where you are, and the place where you end up is still meaningful and still important, even if it was unexpected.”

In Season 2, Hannah and Bailey are expected to continue bonding, but when Owen shows up again, things really go off the rails. Similar to the first season, the plot was pulled from Dave’s novel The First Time I Saw Him, a sequel to The Last Thing He Told Me.
“After The Last Thing He Told Me, I got so many incredible notes from readers, and the question that they asked more than any other was, ‘What happened next?’” Dave told Bookweb.org earlier this year. “They were asking as if Hannah and Bailey and Owen were real people. And to me, at that point, they were. I spent so much time with them over this decade that I was working on the first book.”
“I was surprised that I had an answer, that I knew exactly where the story would pick up. I knew exactly what happened after that moment in the design center and why Owen came back at that moment. In my initial imagination of the book, it was complete unto itself, so it was a surprise to feel like, ‘Oh, I actually know where the book starts again and what happens next,’” she continued. “Very quietly, I sat down and wrote the first 100 pages without talking to my editor or my agent or anyone. I needed to figure out if I was sure this was the story I wanted to tell, and that it would honor the first book.”
Get to know ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ Season 2 cast
Along with Garner, Rice and Coster-Waldau, David Morse, Augusto Aguilera, Josh Hamilton, Nick Hargrove and Michael Hyatt are all expected to return for The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2. They will be joined by newcomers Judy Greer, Rita Wilson, Michael Galante, John Noble and Luke Kirby.
Their roles and overall impact on the plot have yet to be announced, but if they are anything like Garner, their appearances will be drama-filled and jaw-dropping.

“I just wrote letters to Laura advocating for myself and talking about what the book meant to me and what the role [meant], what I saw in the role and the ways that I felt,” Garner told Variety in 2023. “While Hannah and I are really quite different, there are some pieces of her that I just relate to so much. I had to get a chance to try it out.”
“Every single day of hair and makeup, I read the book up to wherever we were shooting,” the actress continued. “I was constantly with the book. You should see my copy! I think I know it better than Josh [Singer, one of the screenwriters] and Laura.”
