See The ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Cast Today: You Won’t Believe How They’ve Changed!

There have been rumors of a reboot — find out if they are true!

It’s been more than two decades since the hit FOX family sitcom “Malcom in the Middle” premiered on January 9, 2000. It feels like just yesterday that we were singing along with the theme song lyrics “You’re not the boss of me now,” and anticipating the hilarious hijinks that the Wilkersons would face in each episode.

The series, which aired 151 episodes over seven seasons, revolved around Malcom (Frankie Muniz), the intelligent middle child of a wildly dysfunctional, yet loving family. The motley cast of characters included his older brothers Francis (Christopher Masterson) and Reese (Justin Berfield), younger brothers Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan) and Jamie (twins Lukas and James Rodriguez), and his mother and father, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) and Hal (Bryan Cranston).

Francis is the eldest, who spends a good portion of the series away at military school. Reese is the trouble-making second oldest, who often lacks common sense. Malcom is the highly intelligent, but socially awkward, middle child, just trying to navigate the insanity of his family while dealing with the pressures of school and adolescence. Dewey was the youngest child for the majority of the show until Jamie was born. Dewey, while also intelligent, often fell victim to the hijinks of his older brothers.

Why so many found ‘Malcom in the Middle’ so appealing

One of the show’s greatest draws was that it felt relatable to a wide audience. The show had a clever and irreverent sense of humor. And the writing was sharp, often highlighting the absurdity of everyday life and family dynamics, all of which resonated with folks of all ages.

Younger generations related to Malcom’s character — being a kid, trying to juggle the pressures of school and social life with the pressures and sometimes hilarious chaos of home life that’s most often out of your control. For older generations watching the show, a character like Lois perfectly portrays the way raising kids can drive you to the brink of craziness some days.

The use of a single-camera format and breaking the fourth wall with Malcolm’s direct address to the audience added a unique and engaging element to the show and influenced subsequent sitcoms that also focused on dysfunctional families, such as “Modern Family” and “The Middle.”

Talk of a Malcom in the Middle reboot

“I would love to know what the family’s up to,” Frankie Muniz told Fox News in October 2022 when asked about rebooting “Malcom in the Middle.” He added that his TV dad Bryan Cranston was “really into the idea” of a revival and that Cranston was “kind of heading writing the script and getting everything rolling. So, there might be something. I would be down 100 percent.”

All-in-all the show was the perfect reminder to viewers that at the end of the day, just about everyone’s family is a little bit crazy at times. And we hope we can return to see how the family is faring in the 2020s.
