In what can only be described as a bold move, one mother of the groom decided to make her son’s big day her big day, too. At least, that’s what some people on the Internet have accused her of, while others believe her outfit choice was completely appropriate for such an affair.
The dress in question was a full-length, glittering sequin gown by designer Gina Bacconi.
This whole debate started when one woman wrote a review for the dress on the John Lewis website stating how fantastic the dress was for her son's New York wedding.
User LardLizard, an eagle-eyed shopper who first noticed the review, kicked off the conversation with this statement: "Just been looking at this dress, and I know this is mean, but read the review and someone bought it for her son's wedding!"
What came next was a barrage of comments from the downright appalled...
"It looks like a wedding dress. Of course, it's completely unsuitable," wrote one user.
...to the not convinced:
"I think it's lovely, but it's definitely a questionable choice for mother-of-the-groom."
"I think it's a little ostentatious," another added.
Other commentators thought the dress perfectly suitable for the occasion.
"Absolutely fine for mother of the groom," one person wrote.
"I can't see the problem to be honest," said another. "It's not white and certainly not like a wedding dress at all. It's more like a cocktail dress, which would be okay to wear at a wedding."
Many pointed out that the venue of the wedding, the time of day, and even what the bridesmaids were wearing would all have to be known before a judgement call could be made as to whether it was an appropriate choice or not.
Regardless of the overwhelming number of comments being in favor of the dress, let's still hope the mother of the groom hasn't witnessed the debate.
