In fact, a study conducted by the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom found evidence that simply watching cute animals — or simply looking at the photos in this article — may contribute to a reduction in stress and anxiety.

That’s no secret to Hollywood, either, since there have been some amazing movies about the joys of dog ownership and heartwarming stories of the unconditional love of of our four-legged friends. My Dog Skip

This 2000 film starring Frankie Muniz, Luke Wilson, Kevin Bacon and Diane Lane is based on an autobiographical book of the same name by Willie Morris. Narrated by Harry Connick Jr., this heartwarming story shows how powerful a friendship between a boy and his dog can be. Stream or rent it on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu or Apple TV.

The original movie, released in 1974 and directed by Joe Camp, is about stray dog who saves two children from kidnappers, despite the fact that the children’s father wouldn’t allow them to give Benji a home. In 2018, the son of the original producer rebooted the film with the same premise. Steam the original on Vudu or Apple TV, and watch the 2018 version on Netflix. 

Lassie Come Home

It wouldn’t be a list of the best dog movies of all time without mentioning Lassie. Originally released in 1943, Lassie Come Home is based on a 1940 book of the same name. It’s about a dog makes a long and perilous trek across Scotland to find her family. If you love big dogs, there’s a chance you’ve seen (and love) Beethoven. This 1992 film stars Bonnie Hunt, Oliver Platt, Stanley Tucci, Dean Jones and Cahrles Grodin. This dog movie is about a loveable but mischievous St. Bernard named Beethoven who, with the help of his family, thwarts dangerous experiments perpetrated by an evil veterinarian. It was written by filmmaker John Hughes of The Breakfast Club and Ferris Buller’s Day Off fame, but under the pseudonym Edmond Dantès. Who among us hasn’t wanted to hug a dog as big and as sweet as Clifford? Clifford The Big Red Dog movie is a beloved children’s story originally released in 1963 by Norman Bridwell. It became so beloved, in fact, that it inspired a series of subsequent books, a TV show, and multiple movies. The most recent one, released in 2021, stars Darby Camp as Emily Elizabeth, and depicts the huge (pun intended) love between a girl and her big red dog. 101 Dalmatians
