How Do I Take Care of My Dog’s Paws? (3 Vet-Approved Tips for Protecting Your Pup)

Tags:

Getting some fresh air with Fido is a great way to spend a summer day – but the hot temperatures could cause pain for your pup. Walking over hot pavement can lead to burned paws. Fortunately, it’s easy to protect your dog from scalding surfaces using these veterinarian-approved tips.

Why Hot Pavement Is Dangerous for a Dog’s Paws

As a dog parent, keeping your pup happy and healthy is a top priority. Summertime is ideal for playing and walking outside. However, spending too much time in the sweltering heat isn’t safe for you or your pooch.

Jerry Klein, DVM, Chief Veterinary Officer for American Kennel Club (AKC), describes why heated pavement can be dangerous.

“Pavement, like asphalt or artificial grass, can become incredibly hot and cause discomfort [and] blisters, and burn a dog’s paw pads,” he explains to AKC. “If the temperature is 85 degrees or over without the chance for the pavement to cool down, the ground may be too hot for safely walking a dog.”

Klein adds that heated pavement increases your dog’s body temperature — making them more likely to develop heat stroke. The good news: there are simple ways to prevent your dog from getting these heat-related injuries.

How To Keep Your Pup Safe Against Scorching Surfaces

Your furry friend deserves to stay comfortable while enjoying the nice weather. Here are three tips for sidestepping red paws:

  • Take the torch test. “To find out if the ground is too hot for your dog to walk on, place your hand comfortably on the pavement for 10 seconds,” Klein says. “If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.”
  • Go early, go late. Avoid taking walks during the hottest time of day. Early mornings and evenings are ideal for walking your dog because the sun’s not fully out and the weather is cooler.
  • Lather up. Apply a moisturizing balm for protection and relief. Dry skin leads to dog’s paws becoming more cracked from hot pavement. A moisturizing balm provides a protective layer on their paws. One to try: Honest Paws Relief Pet Balm (Buy from Honestpaws.com, $29.95)
