What is fatty liver disease?

“Fatty liver disease, now often called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), happens when too much fat builds up inside liver cells,” explains Steven Goldberg, MD, MBA, clinician and chief medical officer of HealthTrackRx. “The main cause is a mismatch between the energy we take in and the energy the body uses, especially when the diet is high in refined carbohydrates, sugar/fructose and saturated fat. Insulin resistance also plays a major role. Over time, the liver starts to make and store extra fat. For some people, this stays as simple fat buildup. For others, it can lead to liver inflammation and scarring, called steatohepatitis, formerly known as NASH.”

Dr. Goldberg says fatty liver disease impacts about one in four adults throughout the world, but is most common in those who:

• Have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
• Have high cholesterol or triglycerides
• Have high blood pressure
• Are overweight or obese
• Are between the ages of 40 and 60

“It is somewhat more common in men and in some ethnic groups, including Hispanic/Mexican-American populations, partly because of genetic factors,” he adds.

5 things you have at a home to help reverse fatty liver disease

A fatty liver disease diagnosis is not a life sentence. Cuilan Li, MD, PhD, a women’s health specialist for JustAnswer, says reversing fatty liver disease, especially in early stages, is possible. “Reducing excess body weight when appropriate, exercising regularly, improving blood sugar and triglycerides and following a healthy diet can substantially reduce liver fat,” adds Dr. Li. 

There are also helpful options that could already be sitting in your pantry or are one quick grocery store trip away. We’re talking about herbs, teas and even veggies that could help reverse fatty liver disease, according to doctors and encouraging new research. Some of the top picks:

Saffron

In a new animal study published in Targetome, mice with fatty liver disease who ate a high-fat diet and were given daily doses of a compound found in saffron called Crocin II for 10 weeks had up to 48 percent lower liver triglycerides, 52 percent lower liver total cholesterol and 19 percent lower body weight. Researchers say Crocin II breaks down a protein called ANGPTL8, which plays a role in lipid metabolism and inflammation and can contribute to fatty liver disease.

“These results suggest that Crocin II may help the liver store less fat and clear it more efficiently,” explains Dr. Goldberg. “That could lower blood and liver fat and reduce weight gain. This matters because fatty liver disease begins when triglycerides and cholesterol build up inside liver cells. Reducing that fat burden targets a root cause of the disease, not just a symptom.”

Tip: Pick up culinary saffron from a reputable source to use in stews, rice, soups and even tea, says Dr. Goldberg. “Avoid high-dose supplements unless discussed with a clinician. Doses above about 1.5 grams per day can be harmful, and saffron may interact with blood pressure or blood sugar medicines,” he adds.

About 0.1 to 0.2 grams, roughly 20 to 40 saffron threads for four to six servings, should be enough saffron per day, says Kardie Tobb, DO, MS, FASPC, FACC, a board-certified preventive cardiologist and the medical director for the Cone Health HeartCare Women’s Heart Health and Cardio-Obstetrics Clinic.

Turmeric 

Small human studies show curcumin may help lower liver fat and improve cholesterol and liver enzyme levels, says Dr. Goldberg.

Tip: “Pair turmeric with black pepper and a small amount of fat to improve absorption; add it to soups, curries or warm milk,” adds Dr. Goldberg. Using one to 1 to 3 grams of turmeric powder per day in food is a good amount, for most adults, says Dr. Tobb. 

Ginger 

Animal research shows ginger may help regulate how much fat is stored in the liver, says Dr. Goldberg.

Tip: “Use fresh grated ginger in tea, stir-fries or dressings,” he adds. Up to 2 to 4 grams of fresh ginger a day is a reasonable amount, while higher amounts may result in heartburn or stomach upset, says Dr. Tobb. People taking blood thinner medications should also be cognizant of how much ginger they are taking, as the combination can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising, adds Dr. Tobb.

Green tea

Green tea contains antioxidants called catechins that may help reduce fat buildup and inflammation in the liver, says Dr. Goldberg.

Tip: “Drink two to three cups of unsweetened green tea daily instead of sugary drinks,” recommends Dr. Goldberg. “Avoid high-dose green tea extract supplements, which have [on rare occasions] been linked to liver injury.”

Garlic and onions 

Lab and animal studies show garlic and onions may help the body process fat more effectively and lower inflammation in the liver, explains Dr. Goldberg.

Tip: “Use fresh garlic [instead of a supplement]; chop it and let it sit for about 10 minutes before cooking, then use it as a flavor base often,” he adds. Aiming for one to two cloves of garlic a day, included in a balanced diet, is a reasonable amount, says Dr. Tobb

What is inflammation in the body?

Inflammation can take different forms. Sometimes it shows up as visible swelling from an injury, part of your body’s natural healing response. Other times it can lurk below the surface and spread. This happens when chemical signals from your cells stay active longer than they should, which can trigger symptoms and illnesses. This body-wide inflammation can be the most harmful over time.

“Inflammation leads to pain, injury and chronic disease,” confirms dietitian Theresa DeLorenzo, RD, a nutrition science professor at Russell Sage College. But she offers hope for this sneaky health issue: “There are foods you can eat to reduce inflammation and reduce this risk.”

The 7 best foods that reduce inflammation naturally

For starters, many experts recommend cutting back on foods known to fuel chronic inflammation, such as gluten-containing wheat, highly processed seed oils, refined sugar or artificial sweeteners, alcohol and dairy. Instead, make the following tasty foods part of your healthy diet:

Fish like salmon

One anti-inflammatory food topped the experts’ lists: fatty fish. “Salmon is rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which are involved in the regulation of inflammatory processes,” explains Johannah Katz, a registered dietitian specializing in preventive care. Those healthy fats work like natural medicine for your body, even helping to ease rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

In an eight-week study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, adults who ate salmon three times per week had significant reductions in the inflammatory markers that showed up in their blood work.

Katz recommends aiming for roughly 4 to 5 ounces (about the size of a deck of cards) of salmon two to three times per week. Or try other oily fish like sardines, trout and mackerel, which also boast an anti-inflammatory effect.

Blueberries

Love berries? Their vivid color is a sign of powerful anti-inflammatory compounds at work, repairing cellular damage. “Blueberries are particularly rich in anthocyanins, the blue-purple polyphenol pigments that have been studied for their effects on oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling,” explains Katz. Adults with metabolic syndrome who supplemented with blueberries decreased expression of inflammatory genes, compared to those who didn’t get berries, according to a Food & Function study. Their cells were literally producing less inflammation.

Katz suggests eating approximately 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries most days and making blueberries part of a polyphenol-rich diet. Other food sources of anthocyanins include green tea, dark chocolate and cloves.

Olive oil

You may be surprised to learn that the olive oil in your kitchen has all-natural pain-relieving powers. “Extra-virgin olive oil contains high levels of oleocanthal, a natural anti-inflammatory compound that has unique properties similar to ibuprofen,” says Dawn Menning, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist with Nutu.

After reviewing 30 studies involving 3,000 participants, scientists publishing in Nutrients found that people who consumed olive oil had significantly reduced levels of inflammation, compared to their oil-skipping peers.

Katz recommends using extra-virgin olive oil daily, “ideally in place of butter or other saturated-fat-rich fats.” Goal: 1 to 2 tablespoons.

Leafy greens or cruciferous vegetables

Your mom was right about eating your veggies. Dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale are rich in vitamins A, C and K, and antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation, says Menning. She adds, “Broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which some researchers believe may slow the progression of osteoarthritis.”

Here’s proof: A study out of Spain found smokers eating broccoli every day for 10 days experienced a 45 percent drop in a key inflammatory marker. Katz recommends eating 1 cup of broccoli daily.

Beans

Researchers are uncovering more and more evidence showing that the health of your gut bacteria (or gut microbiome) directly impacts inflammation throughout your body. And fiber-rich foods like beans, lentils and chickpeas support the health of the gut microbiome, essentially reducing inflammation from the inside out.

“Legumes also provide plant protein, magnesium and numerous phytochemicals,” Katz adds. The proof of their anti-inflammatory benefits: Obese adults who ate four servings of cooked legumes per week had greater reductions in key inflammation markers than those without legumes, in one study.

How much to eat for yourself? Katz suggests reaching for up to 1 cup of cooked beans, lentils or chickpeas at least four times per week.

Fermented foods

Remember how we mentioned the importance of the gut microbiome? In a Stanford study published in the journal Cell, when adults consumed high-fermented foods for 10 weeks, their gut microbiome changed so favorably, it triggered a decrease in 19 different inflammatory markers in the body. “This is where the evidence surprised even the researchers,” says nutritionist Sarah Otto, co-founder of the gut-health company Goodness Lover. “Fermented foods did something fiber alone did not.” In other words, fermented foods offer unique anti-inflammatory benefits you can’t get anywhere else.

Otto recommends starting with one serving a day of fermented foods that reduce inflammation—like kefir, yogurt, kimchi or sauerkraut—and build up to two or three.

Healing spices

Don’t overlook spices, which are easy to layer into anti-inflammatory meals to boost health benefits. ”Culinary herbs are also medicinal,” reminds Bethany Tennant, a naturopathic physician and certified nutrition specialist, part of this year’s International Olympic Committee diploma of sports nutrition program. She calls out turmeric, ginger and cinnamon as stars in this category. She explains that the curcumin compounds in turmeric and the gingerols in ginger directly “impact inflammatory pathways.”

Tennant recommends using anti-inflammatory spices regularly in meals, multiple times a week. “Daily would be best.”

How to maximize the benefits of foods that reduce inflammation

Now that you have a winning grocery list to work from, consider one more piece of advice: “The real secret is consistency over perfection,” says Anna Cabeca, DO, a triple-board certified physician specializing in women’s health. “Build these foods into your meals regularly, eat them whole—not juiced—and pair them together. That combination of protein, healthy fat and nutrient-dense vegetables is what creates real results.”

Looking for a simple framework to bring all these foods together? Consider adopting a Mediterranean-style diet, which emphasizes many of these tasty, anti-inflammatory superstars while avoiding things like fried foods and processed meats that can trigger inflammation.

How long does it take to feel results?

The time varies from person to person. “There isn’t a universal timeline, because inflammatory markers are affected by body weight, smoking, physical activity, sleep, underlying disease and the rest of someone’s diet,” explains Katz. “However, human dietary interventions have detected changes in inflammatory biomarkers in as little as 10 days and over approximately six to eight weeks.” That’s motivation to start today!

How to watch ‘The Love Hypothesis’

The Love Hypothesis will be available to stream on Prime Video on September 23.

Things began with the actor being asked about the show’s place in his life, and with him reflecting that as a child he was dealing with significant hearing and speech challenges, a difficult relationship with his father and relentless bullying from other kids. But it was television in general, and Star Trek in particular, that offered him some sense of solace.

“I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and Star Trek had a huge impact on my life,” Ferrigno gently reflects. “As a kid growing up, I had to deal with a speech impediment because of the hearing issue. But I remember watching the series, and I loved Captain Kirk. I loved the way he conducted himself. I wanted to be like him, the way he’s on the ship commanding, and especially his personality. Sixty years ago you didn’t have the technology we have today, so it had more to do with the chemistry of the cast. It was beautiful magic. Back in those days, we had Channels 2, 4 and 7. You had Adventures of Superman during the day and in the evening you had Batman and Captain Kirk. So to me, it was a wonderful time, and I’m very excited that 60 years later I’m here, speaking to you at a Star Trek convention, which is huge.” 

‘Star Trek’ Las Vegas

This convention, being held a little less than six decades after the show debuted and more than 50 years since the first con was held in New York City, has brought together thousands of fans from around the world in celebration of a television series that lasted only three seasons from 1966 to 1969. 

“If somebody told me this 50, 60 years ago, I would’ve laughed, because you would never think that,” he points out. “I’ve never been to a Star Trek convention before, but being here, I see all of these people and it’s, like, where’d they come from? But it’s amazing, the following.”

For Ferrigno, though, Star Trek wasn’t simply entertainment. Looking back, he recognizes that Kirk and the starship Enterprise gave him somewhere else to go at a particularly painful point in his childhood.

“Being very depressed growing up as a kid, the show would let my imagination escape and be free, and it gave me some excitement,” he reflects. “That’s why it had such an effect on me. I was a kid growing up poor and I couldn’t get attention from anyone. They used to call me ‘Deaf Mute,’ ‘Deaf Louie’ and I was bullied. I had a very severe relationship with my father, who was like a police captain. So in my life, I ended up becoming a kind of sheriff. I became a movie star, TV star, I ended up writing books and doing all kinds of stuff.” 

Why Lou Ferrigno thinks ‘Star Trek’ still connects

Ferrigno believes the aforementioned sense of escape he felt is part of what has allowed Star Trek to endure for so many years. 

“It’s like the connection with superheroes so many people have,” he explains. “That’s why today you have so many different Marvel characters and movies. The connection is about power;  there’s superhero love. The same thing with Star Trek. It’s the connection it makes with people. You want to be in space, you wish you could be in space. You could fantasize, you could think about the story and you want to be with those people. That connection never leaves you.”

And for him, that connection ultimately extended beyond Captain Kirk to actor William Shatner himself. “I became friends with Bill over the years,” he notes. “As a matter of fact, I had dinner with him two weeks ago. And Bill… he’s fierce, he’s tough, he’s very smart, especially with his knowledge of life. He’s always eager to learn more things about life and you learn from him.”

As is pretty obvious based on the reverence in his voice, at 74 Ferrigno is still looking up to Shatner, although these days it’s the man as opposed to the starship captain who inspires him. “What it is about him that I learned is that I have something to look forward to,” the actor suggests. “For a man who’s 95, he has a wonderful depth of life. He works, he motivates so many people, he’s written novels, he’s done theater. God bless him, because that’s a path I’d like to follow.” 

“And you’ve got to hand it to him,” he continues. “He’s a very entertaining guy, but beyond that, I’ve learned about his history. Over the years I’ve seen him many different times at different events, and Im amazed at his work ethic and his motivation. He never really takes time off; he’s always doing something to better himself. It’s amazing, because I learned so much from him. He has incredible wisdom.”

‘Sensual’ Shatner

During the conversation, this writer shared something Shatner had said in a previous interview when asked whether, as he grew older, he ever thought about slowing down. “Why would I slow down?” Shatner replied at the time. “I am more sensual now, in the true meaning of the word sensual—in touch with your senses—than I’ve ever been. Why would I slow down? Why would I stop?”

Ferrigno’s response is immediate: “Exactly! That’s why he enjoys every day, because life is short. Most people, sometimes when they retire, they’re basically out of sight, out of mind. But the thing is, what he’s doing keeps him alive.”

It’s a philosophy Ferrigno has embraced himself. “Oh, yeah. I’m going to be 75. I still train every day and I love coming to these kinds of conventions, connecting with the fans, because I learn from them. They learn from me. It’s wonderful, that connection. That’s why I look up to Bill Shatner. Life is short and it’s about yourself, what you maximize. It’s about the beauty of the connections you make, the love and the work you do to maximize your own personal power and passion.”

First, what is ‘Lioness?’ 

Lioness: Special Ops is a military show centered around CIA operative Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña) and her team. They solve crimes, protect our country and engage in battles, all while trying to protect themselves and their families. It’s based on a real U.S. military program from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and was co-created by Sheridan, actress Jill Wagner and her husband David Lemanowicz. 

“We came up with the idea in my backyard in Tennessee,” Wagner told Woman’s World earlier this year. “He [Lemanowicz] was the first person that told me about lionesses. I didn’t know they existed. Taylor has created this version of them that you see, but these women exist. There are b-d-ss women that go on these ops, and they do these jobs and we’re telling their story. They do exist, whether they’re called lionesses or not.”

The show currently has two complete seasons and is in the middle of airing its third. So far this season, Joe is attacked in her home by two agents of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), which is a direct result of the dangerous mission in Ukraine to capture a top Russian target. This season is also told in a dual timeline format, which is different from past seasons. 

“Every season is completely different. You think you know what you’re gonna see. You don’t. It’s completely different,” Laysla De Oliveira, who plays Jo’s colleague Cruz Manuelos in the show, previously told Woman’s World. “The mission’s really personal this year, and the stakes are really high because of that.” 

“But the amazing thing is that we know what we’re getting into, so we can prepare a little bit more. For me, this year was a challenge, but it was very exciting to see Cruz do things that I haven’t seen before, like smile, make jokes and explore more of her personal life,” she continued. “When I was reading those lines, there was a lot of, ‘How does my character say that? How is it so simple?’ It’s so simple, but playing something for two years in a certain way, and then all of a sudden you’re saying things you’ve never said before—how do you do that?”

Is ‘Lioness’ coming back for Season 4? 

As of publication, Lioness has not officially been renewed for a Season 4. That hasn’t stopped the cast from talking about it, though. In an interview with Screenrant, De Oliveira said that Season 3 “ends on a cliffhanger” and that fans “won’t want it” to end.

Wagner added to that saying that they “are going to get a Season 4.” 

“When people see what he [Sheridan] wrote for the finale, we are getting a Season 4,” she continued. “Or I will pay you $100.” 

As for what that cliffhanger will be, it’s anyone’s guess—but as long as it gets viewers, it’s safe to say fans will be thrilled if there is a Season 4.

What we know about Season 2 of ‘The Paper’ 

Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, The Paper expands the world of The Office beyond Dunder Mifflin, following a documentary crew as it turns its cameras on a struggling Midwestern newspaper. The connection between the two shows goes beyond their mockumentary style, with Oscar Nuñez reprising his role as Oscar Martinez from The Office. But more significantly, it brought together a whole new ensemble of charcters.

“It all felt very surreal,” Chelsea Frei, who plays Mare Pritti in the show, told Woman’s World last year. “I truly can’t even believe we’re here doing this.”

Another thing Frei probably couldn’t believe they were doing? Kissing! Season 1 ended with Mare finally kissing her boss, Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), and judging by the newly released trailer, that moment was only the beginning. Their budding romance looks set to become a major part of the story when The Paper returns.

“We shot that ending like a million different ways,” she told Swooon in September of last year. “I didn’t even know that’s how it was going to be. There are versions where we didn’t kiss. [I think] they wanted to see how the season felt and where it went.” 

“I always say, and I think it’s true, that Mare and Ned just both want to make something amazing. Whatever their relationship ends up being or is right now, it’s almost a byproduct of this important thing to them, which is the paper.”

Also going to be a big part of Season 2? The awards the reporters won at the end the last season. Throughout the trailer viewers see Ned and the rest of the company’s executives pushing them to create even more award-winning content. During these exchanges it’s also brought up that they live in a small town—Toledo, Ohio—where there is not going to be life changing news every day. Well, minus the day that Adelola (Gbemisola Ikumelo) and Travis (Eric Rahill) decide to go chase down a tornado, which can be seen in the trailer. 

“I’m incredibly excited to get dubbed back in. It’s really nice to do something silly about journalism, which is a very serious thing,” Gleeson told Deadline in January of this year. “I think if we were doing a big paper, you would be getting into all sorts of stuff that would be difficult to talk about in any way that was funny. The fact that it’s a really local place, you can find the small things that mean bigger things. And in a way, that’s always the news that really matters—the one that’s just on your street. So yeah, we’re loving it. I’m very lucky to be a part of it.”

‘The Paper’ Season 2 cast

As of publication, all of the Season 1 cast members of The Paper will be back for Season 2. This includes Gleeson, Frei, Ikumelo, Rahill Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, Tim Key, Ramona Young, Duane R. Shepard Sr., Alex Edelman and Oscar Nuñez, who, as noted, was the only main character from The Office to reprise his role.

They will be joined by Allan Havey, Jon Lovitz, Lisa Gilroy, Matt Braunger, Toks Olagundoye, Phil Hendrie and Andy Richter, who went viral during his Season 34 Dancing with the Stars run.

‘The Paper’ Season 2 release date

Season 2 of The Paper will air on Peacock on Wednesday, September 9. There will be 10 episodes total.

• using harsh soaps or cleansers
• over-exfoliating with acids or scrubs
• frequently switching between lots of active ingredients
• stress
• environmental factors like pollution and extreme weather
• certain medications or treatments

Emily Rose with USA Today writes, “Harsh cleansers and over-stripping products can also weaken the skin microbiome by removing beneficial bacteria, accelerating dryness and visible aging. And as we age, the skin naturally loses hydration and structural support. On the skin, disruption often looks like dryness, redness, changes in texture, or more frequent blemishes.”

So, what does a KFC-inspired Oreo actually taste like, where can you find it and—perhaps most importantly—is it coming to the U.S.? What is the new flavor?

If the two companies collaborating haven’t scared you off yet, the actual flavor just might. KFC and Oreo have partnered to release a fried-chicken-flavored cookie. Yes, you read that right. Taking the classic chocolate cookie Oreo fans know and love and combining it with a cream blended with 11 savory seasoning, this new cookie is sure to confuse you.

The Oreo creme, which replaces the cookie’s usual sweet, white filling, consists of herbs, spices and salt that resemble the classic KFC batter. So while it’s not actually chicken-flavored, it’s still unique enough to leave everyone questioning the combo. The cookie also features the KFC logo on one side, instead of the usual Oreo logo.

This new fried-chicken-flavored Oreo isn’t available everywhere yet, which may be a good thing. Currently, the product has been released only in China. But it’s possible it will one day make it to the U.S. if it gets a positive reaction.

It seems that Oreo may have taken the adventurous flavors a step too far with the fried chicken flavor and fans are agreeing. Comments about the new cookie show that many aren’t excited about the flavor and have no interest in trying it. One reads, “Why would they make the kfc ones when they could make edible ones,” while another says, “Stop messing with the Oreos!”

It isn’t the first time an Oreo this strange has been released. In 2018, the Hot Chicken Wing and Wasabi flavors were released in Chinese markets, but considering they never made their way to the US, it’s safe to say they weren’t a success.

Other flavors on the way

While the Fried Chicken Oreos make their way through international markets, a couple of fan-favorite flavors have returned to shelves in the US. If you’re looking for something new that doesn’t taste like a savory bucket of chicken, you can check these out.

Oreo’s Apple Pie a la Mode cookies have returned, as well as the Orange Creme cookies. Both were major hits when they were first released last year and will officially be available again this fall. While the Orange Creme tastes just like a regular Oreo, just with orange-colored cream, it does feature spooky designs for Halloween including a witch’s hat, a skull, a haunted mansion, a howling wolf in front of a moon a jack-o-lantern and a hand rising from a grave.

The Apple Pie a la mode features two vanilla cookies, stuffed with apple pie and vanilla ice cream flavored cream. So, if you’re someone who enjoys going all out for fall and spooky season, be sure to pick these tasty Oreo flavors up this season.
