Tom Selleck and Carol Burnett’s friendship went beyond ‘Magnum’

Tom Selleck and Carol Burnett enjoyed a working relationship, but when the cameras weren’t rolling, there was a friendship and respect between them. So close were the duo that in 1984, Selleck took over Emmy hosting duties for the funny lady when she fell ill and could not take the lead herself. Ironically, he ended up winning his first Emmy that night!

“Carol Burnett was to host the Emmys, but she got sick,” Selleck shared in an article in Emmy Magazine back in 2013. “She’s a pal, so when she asked if I’d step in as host, I said yes. I was backstage when my category was called. I’d already been nominated several times and hadn’t won. I think the audience could tell how shocked I was,” he remembered of that night. The duo also worked together in other capacities, having appeared alongside one another in promotional videos for the Space Foundation.

Why Annie F. Downs embraced being a ‘beginner’ again

Although Annie has written bestselling books and recorded hundreds of podcast episodes, creating a television show challenged her in a completely different way. “I love being new at things. I love being an amateur,” she explains. “It isn’t often that I get to do something brand new.” She recalls telling her now-fiancé before filming began, “This is the only day of my whole life that it’ll be the first day I ever film a TV show.”

From dating and faith to addiction recovery and navigating loss, Annie believes today’s audiences are looking for something deeper than surface-level inspiration. “We want authentic people to tell us the truth,” she says. “We don’t just want authentic people telling us their stories.” Instead, she believes people are searching for wisdom from those who have walked through hardship and emerged with faith intact.

“Across these episodes, we get to hear from people who’ve walked through real hardship and come out the other side with wisdom and faith intact,” Annie explains. The conversations changed Annie, too. “I learned from everybody,” she reflects. “You can sit at a table with anybody and learn from them, and God can speak to you through anybody around a table.”

Annie’s powerful message for women starting over

What Annie wants you to take away from her new show

As Annie prepares for the September release of her new book, Don’t Let That Hold You Back: A Bold Guide to Finding the Life You’re Longing For, her deepest hope remains the same whether she’s writing, podcasting or hosting a television show. “If you look at my Instagram bio, it says ‘Making friends + making things,'” she says. “Those are my two favorite things to do.”

Through I Gotta Ask, which streams on Wonder Project’s subscription service on Prime Video, she hopes audiences walk away feeling connected and encouraged. “My hope for the book reader, for the Instagram follower, for the podcast listener, for the person who watches the TV show, is that they’ll feel like they have made a new friend,” Annie says. “I hope they feel like they got 30 minutes of hope and light and joy and curiosity. And I hope it gives them the inspiration to do something different.”

Inside Betty White’s ‘Golden Girls’ last-minute role swap

The irony is that the actress who became inseparable from Rose nearly didn’t play the character at all. “They knew older, talented women were out there and not getting work, so they’d be eager to do the show,” suggests Colucci. “They thought, ‘Why not take our pick of them?’ They started this really exhaustive search of women of that age and caliber and, ironically, ultimately came down to two of the most obvious choices—Betty and Rue McClanahan.

“They picked Betty first and they cast her as Blanche, kind of going along The Mary Tyler Moore Show lines and her character there, Sue Ann Nivens. By the time Rue got offered a chance to come in and audition, she had her heart set on Blanche, but they said to her, ‘No, that’s Betty’s role. If you want to do this show at all, you’d better read for Rose.’”

Having lost her choice role in a similar situation on the sitcom Soap, she decided that she would read for the Rose character. But, notes Colucci, “It was only a little bit into the process when the pilot’s director, Jay Sandrich, saw Rue read as Rose and said, ‘I’m going to ask you to do something unconventional. I’m going to ask you to go into the other room and study the Blanche lines and see what you can do with that.’ Rue was, like, ‘Okay!’ She happily did that and then they broke the news to Betty that they really wanted to recommend the switch. To Betty’s credit, she acquiesced, and so history was made really at the last minute there, too.

“Betty played Rose in a way that I don’t think anyone else could have and that’s why that role swap is so vital to the show’s success,” he continues. “Not that Rue isn’t brilliant and probably couldn’t have done something different with it, but I have always had this adage that it takes a brilliant person to play stupid. And Betty was one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. The fact that she played dumb so beautifully is because she’s able to process so many thoughts at one time, where she could remember her next line, hit her mark, play the attitude and, as she told me, ‘Keep the light out of my eyes.’ If you’re going to play somebody that naïve and innocent, you can’t have a twinkle in your eye that says, ‘I know what I’m saying with this risqué line.’ You have to seem like you’re saying it by accident. She had to keep that light out of her eyes for seven years—actually eight if you include The Golden Palace. It required that level of brilliance and Betty brought that.”

Why we love Rose Nylund

With Rose, Betty White created one of TV sitcoms’ most beloved characters. While Dorothy brought skepticism, Blanche brought confidence and Sophia brought mischief, Rose brought something equally important: optimism. Her innocence, kindness and unique view of the world gave The Golden Girls much of its heart. These are some of the reasons we continue to love Rose:

Her innocence never felt mean-spirited: Rose saw the best in people and usually approached life with trust rather than cynicism. Even when she was taken advantage of, her goodness remained intact.

The St. Olaf stories became legendary: No matter the topic, Rose somehow had a story about her bizarre hometown, and the increasingly absurd tales became one of the show’s favorite running gags (as did Dorothy’s reactions to them).

She was often smarter than people gave her credit for: Rose could be naïve, but she wasn’t foolish. Time and again, she revealed surprising wisdom, emotional intelligence and common sense when her friends least expected it.

Her optimism was contagious: When Dorothy was frustrated or Blanche was discouraged, Rose often found a way to see a brighter side of things. Her positivity helped balance the group’s dynamic.

She had impeccable timing: Thanks to Betty’s performance, Rose could deliver an innocent remark that left everyone else speechless. Some of the show’s biggest laughs came from lines Rose didn’t even realize were funny.

She loved deeply and completely: Whether it was her late husband Charlie, her children, her friends or even complete strangers, Rose cared about people with remarkable sincerity.

She wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable: Rose openly shared her fears, insecurities and heartbreaks, making her one of the most emotionally accessible characters on the series.

She reminded viewers that kindness is a strength: While other characters sometimes viewed her gentleness as a weakness, Rose repeatedly showed that compassion and decency require real courage.

She made us believe in the goodness of people: Through heartbreak, disappointment and life’s everyday challenges, Rose never stopped believing that people were worth loving and trusting—a quality that continues to make her inspiring decades later.

Getting to know the real Betty White

While researching Golden Girls Forever, Colucci had the opportunity to spend time with Betty White at her home. The experience only reinforced everything he had come to believe about her. “It’s funny that my interaction with each of the women was so typical to who they are,” he laughs. “Betty was so busy at 84 in 2006 that I had an hour with her, so I spent that hour with Betty in her butter-yellow living room at home with her golden retriever Pontiac lying on my feet. It could not have been a more Betty White experience.

“Betty is a pro at interviewing and even though we only had an hour, that was the equivalent of three hours with somebody else, because Betty could speak in perfect sound bites and give you what you need right away. Her memory was impeccable and she had funny thoughts about everything. What’s also funny is that looking at my tape recorder, you can hear at an hour and one minute her assistant come in and say, ‘I’m sorry, Betty, there’s no more time for today.’ That’s how scheduled she was. We ended up having some phone follow-up later, but that one hour ended up being almost enough time.”

Colucci points out that the experience was pretty much how any fan would hope it would be from someone whose public image had become synonymous with warmth and optimism—an image Betty understood better than anyone. “When I arrived at her house,” he smiles warmly at the memory, “I had come from another interview and had been at lunch and had had about 20 iced teas over the course of that interview. By the time I got to Betty’s house, I had to pee so bad that when I rang the doorbell, I knew I had a minute or two to set up my equipment and my computer, but the first thing I could think was, ‘Betty, I’m so sorry, but I need your bathroom right away.’

“She and her assistant answered the door and they stood in the doorway, and Betty jokingly partially blocked my way for a second and said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t have one. I’m just so nice that I don’t go to the bathroom. You’ll just have to use the gas station down the street.'”

A few years earlier, Colucci had seen another side of White’s connection with people while attending a Golden Girls DVD signing with Betty, Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan in New York. The event was supposed to be a routine promotional appearance. It turned into something much bigger.

“I had met them each in passing before, but this was really seeing the three of them in action. They were signing furiously. This line was overwhelming. They were such good sports because they could easily have claimed, ‘Hey, we’re in our 70s at this point. We’re tired. We need a nap before we go do David Letterman. We need to freshen up.’ They stayed and signed, and that line was wrapped so tightly around those blocks. I happened to be standing up near the three ladies taking pictures and the Barnes & Noble—if you remember, now it’s the Trader Joe’s in Chelsea—it’s all windows in that one section.”

Among the people gathered outside was one young woman who found a way to get Betty’s attention. “This girl with a poster board pressed herself up against the glass. I mean, it was like The Beatles were in there—and it wasn’t just a calm step-and-repeat line either. This was a line of people going crazy, especially when they could look in the window and get an eyeful of the girls. And so this girl with a poster board pressed herself against the window and the poster board said, ‘Betty, will you share cheesecake with me?’ Betty, who was sitting right by the window, turned to her and went like, ‘Oh, sorry, too full.’ And then smiled at the girl and blew a kiss. The girl fell backward. She practically fainted as though Paul McCartney had blown a kiss at her.

“On top of that,” he closes, “this was a girl who was, at the time, in her 20s. This was 2006. Do the math. These are young kids falling in love with these old ladies. Maybe they remind them of their grandmas or maybe they just remind them of the interplay they have with their own friends of, ‘You’re the one we call the slut. You’re the one who we call dumb.’ I think those relationships are perennial and we can all find ourselves in them.”

When did Dolly own the home?

Although many didn’t know about Dolly’s ownership of the home, it’s said that she purchased it in 2004 and was an owner for about a decade.

“I heard that it reminded her of her grandmother’s childhood home,” most recent owner Cris Lapp shared.

Lapp, who purchased the home in 2022 for $1.3 million, shared that he kept most of the property the same as it was from Parton’s ownership. But Lapp also added a few Dolly touches that made the home more of a draw to Dolly fans.

One of these additions was a custom-made glass window above the front door with Dolly’s name and her signature butterfly. Also, on the fence you can find a sign that says, “Former home of Dolly Parton, Singer, Actress & American Icon.”

Over the years, Dolly has spoken about her different homes, including her former home in Idyllwild, California, but the Solvang house was one she didn’t mention. However, the founder of Secret Solvang which does historical deep dives and offers tours, is certain Parton was once an owner.

“Dolly definitely owned the house,” Wes Leslie, founder of Secret Solvang explained. “… She hung on to it, maybe as an investment property. She had family connected to her, maybe living in it. She knew about Solvang and liked the place.”

Although you may not have known about Dolly’s home in Solvang, you’ve definitely heard of a few others she’s owned. Dolly’s current residence is in a 3,324 square foot home in Brentwood, Tennessee. She previously lived in a Nashville bungalow, which she purchased with her husband, Carl Dean, in 1980. She’s also been the owner of a cabin in Idyllwild, California and another home in West Hollywood.

While the Solvang house is currently for sale, you can’t tour the inside of the home. But you are able to get a glimpse of the outside while on a stroll.

Just a few days ago, the singer took to TikTok where she paid homage to none other than Shania Twain with a stunning cover of her hit song, “Still the One.” The stripped down version of the ballad showcased Ella’s stunning vocals, and her love for the track was reflected in her caption where she wrote “I’ll never get over this song.”

Other stores offering mystery food surprise bags 

Aldi is far from the first chain in the U.S. to offer some form of a mystery box. Stores like Whole Foods Market, Tim Hortons and Circle K also provide customers a chance to enjoy surprise products via the Too Good to Go app. Known as the “the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food,” the app allows you to purchase unsold snacks, ingredients and even meals (usually nearing their expiration date) from shops, cafes and grocery stores in your area. 

How exactly does this work?

1. You open the Too Good To Go app to see what businesses in your area have Surprise Bags.
2. Though you won’t know the exact contents you’ll receive, you can still filter by budget and dietary preferences.
3. You pay via the app, then visit the store during a specified collection window and provide proof of receipt to get your food.

In most cases, you’re likely to get a random assortment of items. In a recent Reddit post, someone revealed their Circle K Surprise Bag came with a bottle of water, two boiled eggs, a bag of Sun Chips and a ham, egg and cheese croissant. Another Whole Foods order also resulted in an amusing mix of items: Jeni’s ice cream, Rao’s frozen lasagna, Jonny Pops popsicles, a four-cheese gluten-free pizza and organic homestyle waffles.

While the bags aren’t exactly themed, you may end up with quite a few similar items depending on what unsold foods are available. A Reddit user quipped, “I think I’m going to need some egg recipes” when they received four dozen eggs—and two cartons of egg alternatives—in their Too Good to Go bag. 

If you’d like to give this version of a mystery grocery bag a try, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so! While Aldi’s promotion is only for a limited time, you can purchase mystery bags at participating retailers and restaurants year-round.

Why your cholesterol numbers matter

High cholesterol is sneaky—it doesn’t cause symptoms, but excess “bad” LDL can build up inside your blood vessels, narrowing arteries and raising your risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke. Cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins are commonly prescribed because they can reduce LDL by 30 to 50 percent and lower the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by roughly 25 to 30 percent, according to Vanita Rahman, MD, an internal medicine and lifestyle medicine physician in Washington, DC.

Still, many women would rather try other paths first. “I see patients all the time who don’t want to take statins to lower their cholesterol,” Dr. Rahman says. “They want to do it naturally, and that’s where we talk about diet and lifestyle changes.”

It’s important to note there’s a reason statins have been dubbed “wonder drugs”: Studies prove they’re safe and highly effective. Still, some may be concerned about minor, often temporary side effects of these popular cholesterol-lowering medications, such as muscle pain or a short-term bump in liver enzymes. Others simply prefer to try natural alternatives before resorting to medication.

An exception: If you’ve already had a heart attack or stroke, Dr. Rahman says statin therapy alongside lifestyle changes is strongly recommended. For others, non-statin strategies alone can make a meaningful difference. Always check with your doctor first to figure out the best treatment options for your unique needs.

Non-statin approach #1: cholesterol-lowering foods

A few delicious additions to your routine can help lower your “bad” cholesterol levels naturally:

Eggs

Surprising but true: Research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that healthy adults who ate two eggs per day for five weeks as part of a low-saturated fat diet significantly lowered their LDL compared to those on a high-saturated fat diet. “Despite their cholesterol content, eggs don’t seem to raise LDL cholesterol in most people,” says Gabrielle Lyon, DO, author of The Forever Strong Playbook. “When you eat more cholesterol, your liver makes less of it.”

Apples

A study from Ohio State University found that eating one apple a day for four weeks lowered oxidized LDL by about 40 percent in healthy, middle-aged adults. “The fiber binds bile acids and helps remove cholesterol, while polyphenols help prevent LDL oxidation and reduce inflammation,” Dr. Lyon explains.

Cinnamon

Enjoying ¼ to ⅔ teaspoons of cinnamon daily significantly lowered LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides—while raising “good” HDL—in as little as four weeks, per a study in the Annals of Family Medicine.

Pecans

University of Georgia researchers found that eating about ½ cup of pecans daily for eight weeks lowered LDL by 10 percent, thanks to their monounsaturated fats, fiber and plant sterols.

Green tea or Earl Grey

Catechins and EGCG in green tea can dramatically reduce LDL, while bergamot (the citrus that flavors Earl Grey) contains polyphenols that “may reduce cholesterol production in the liver, similar to how statins work,” Dr. Lyon says.

Also smart: Loading up on soluble fiber from beans, lentils, oats, barley and whole produce can meaningfully lower LDL. Swapping saturated fats (red meat, butter, full-fat dairy) for unsaturated fats from olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocado helps, too.

Non-statin approach #2: natural supplements

Several supplements may help bring your cholesterol down, says Raj Dasgupta, MD, Chief Medical Advisor for Garage Gym Reviews:

• Red yeast rice contains a natural compound similar to what’s in statins. “When something works the same way as a statin, it can behave like a statin,” Dr. Rahman cautions—including potential muscle pain side effects.
• Soluble fiber like psyllium husk “binds to cholesterol in the gut so your body flushes it out instead of absorbing it,” Dr. Dasgupta says. Aim for 5 to 10 grams daily.
• Plant sterols and stanols (about 2 grams a day) block cholesterol absorption in the intestines.
• Omega-3 fatty acids support heart health and lower triglycerides. Dr. Rahman suggests food sources like walnuts, chia seeds and hemp. For a supplement, try Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega.
• CoQ10 can ease muscle soreness linked to statins or red yeast rice.

Always loop in your doctor before starting supplements, especially if you take other medications.
