Elderly Veteran’s Accident at Kroger Brings Shoppers and Staffers Together to Preserve His Dignity

ROME, Georgia — It could’ve been a humiliating situation. Instead, it set off a chain of generous acts for an inspirational story that’s warming hearts across the country.

An older gentleman with cancer didn’t make it to a toilet while he was shopping at a Kroger supermarket. He couldn’t have known that the younger woman he’d lock eyes with would be the exact right person to help him in this vulnerable situation.

Lisa Lemming Jackson works at a senior home care center and realized that another shopper with whom she exchanged smiles may have needed her assistance. So she approached him and asked if he could use a hand. He began to tear up.

“I have colon cancer and I have had a really bad accident. If I get up out of this cart everyone will know… What should I do?” the man, named Elmer, asked Jackson, according to a Facebook post Jackson shared.

Kroger employees swiftly leapt into action, handing over wipes and fresh clothes to change into in privacy, all while Jackson stayed by his side. The ill man sobbed and apologized, admitting he had to get home quickly because his wife was by herself.

But the really beautiful moment happened when Jackson and Elmer arrived at the checkout aisle. There, they saw his groceries, already bagged up. The cost was covered.

“He cried harder,” Jackson wrote in her Facebook post. “He said he fought in Vietnam and [the] Korean War and loved his country, but up until [to]day he said he thought his country forgot about him.”

Happily, it had not.
