Queen Elizabeth Cracked a Hilarious Joke About Prince William and Kate’s Cake Before Their Wedding

You don’t need to be a member of the royal family to know that weddings can be tense — especially with all the stress leading up to the big day! So taking time for a few laughs along the way is essential. According to a new documentary, Queen Elizabeth provided a few giggles herself in the days leading up to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding, which took place 10 years ago today.

Apparently, a few adjustments needed to be made to Buckingham Palace before the reception. We aren’t just talking about simply adding extra decorations or lighting to a ballroom, either. The UK aired an hour-long special called The Day Will and Kate Got Married in which Fiona Cairns, the woman who made William and Kate’s wedding cake, explained that a fairly hefty renovation was needed in order to fit the massive confection into the event space.

Because of the cake’s height (three feet!) and the trolley they rolled it in with, a door had to be totally removed from its hinges inside the palace. Cairns was understandably nervous about altering such a prestigious residence… especially when she found out Elizabeth would be coming to check on how things were going.

“I was told that Her Majesty would be coming through the door at the top of the Picture Gallery to chat at midday, so no pressure, of course, never having built this cake,” Cairns explained in the documentary.

But as we know, Elizabeth isn’t always as stuffy and serious as she seems. Cairns learned that firsthand when the monarch cracked a joke. “I remember her saying, ‘I hear that you’ve been dismantling my house?'” Even when said in a humorous tone, we’re pretty sure hearing something like that from Elizabeth would set off our nerves!

Cairns was luckily able to take it all in stride. “I said to her ‘We had to take a door down from the room below for the trolley to go through with the cake’, but it was all put back in the end so it was fine.”

Jokes aside, we’d bet Elizabeth didn’t mind the modifications one bit as she celebrated Prince William and Kate’s wedding — and as she enjoyed a slice of that fabulous cake!
