Ted Danson’s Wife Mary Steenburgen Joins ‘A Man on the Inside’ Season 2 in Romantic Role
The real-life couple's on-screen romance debuts November 20—and Ted says filming together was 'magical’
When it comes to sitcoms, no one does it better than Ted Danson. Between his comedic timing, effortlessly cool demeanor and impeccable style, he truly is one of the greats. And something that he’s currently great in is the hit Netflix show A Man on the Inside. Below, we share everything you need to know about the show, including when the new season comes out and how Danson’s wife, Mary Steenburgen, is connected to it.
What to know about ‘A Man on the Inside’ Season 2
A Man on The Inside is a Netflix comedy that follows the retired Charles after he goes undercover in a nursing home to try and solve a case. It’s witty, fun, heartwarming and perfect for a cozy night in.
“It’s based on The Mole Agent, a documentary from Chile. The documentary is so good and special and hits on such important themes. Michael Schur and Morgan Sackett took that and turned it into this incredible, beautiful television show,” star Mary Elizabeth Ellis told Woman’s World in November of 2024. “It was such a joy to turn up every day on set and have Ted set the tone for the day, because he’s so kind. He’s so generous. He shows up having all his stuff unlocked, which is incredible because the man’s in his 70s, and he has a lot to say in the show.”
For Season 2 specifically, Charles will go undercover again, but this time at Wheeler College and not at a nursing home.
“We are thrilled to make another season of A Man on the Inside, starring young up-and-comer Ted Danson,” Schur told Tudum by Netflix earlier this year. “From our partners at Netflix and Universal TV to the writers, cast, and crew, it’s a truly exceptional team of talented and lovely people, with one notable exception (young up-and-comer Ted Danson, who’s kind of a nightmare).”
A look at who’s joining the Season 2 cast—including Ted Danson’s wife
Danson may be the star of A Man on The Inside, but in Season 2 his wife Mary Steenburgen is practically guaranteed to steal the show. She is expected to play a woman named Mona Margadoff, a former musician who is heavily involved in the new case Charles is trying to crack. To make matters even more dramatic, Mona is also trying to steal Charles’ heart, something that up until now has only belonged to his late wife.
“It’s just magical,” Danson said on his podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name earlier this year. “We’re falling in love. The story evolves, but I’m just head over heels. My character is in love with her, and to sit there on camera and look into your wife’s eyes—and we’re nauseatingly in love in private life—and just disappear into her eyes in front of a camera is pretty astounding.”
Along with Steenburgen, Jason Mantzoukas, Max Greenfield, Gary Cole, Constance Marie and Linda Park are also expected to join the cast. Returning will be Ellis and some of the other Season 1 cast members.
“I was surrounded by truly wonderful, brilliant actors. The opportunity to work with Stephen McKinley Henderson is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. All of the younger folk— Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz—everybody was so good,” Danson told Tudum in May of this year. “And to get to play with Sally Struthers. [With] Susan Ruttan who plays Gladys [a resident who has dementia]—you’re always making use of something so sad and tragic to tell your story or to get a laugh, but she was so tender and real that you couldn’t deny that we were talking about something very real, very sad.”
‘A Man on the Inside’ Season 2 release date
A Man on The Inside will debut on Netflix on November 20. Past that, it’s unclear if there will be a third season of the show.
