Two famous faces within the WWE whose relationship people often wonder about is that of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Roman Reigns—so are these two related? Are Roman Reigns and The Rock related?
The connection between Roman Reigns goes back generations—and it’s a familial link that’s a bit complicated. Both Roman and Dwayne are a part of the Anoa’i wrestling family. At the root of this family were Amituana’i Anoa’i and Peter Maivia. Back in the day, these two men were close as can be, and to solidify their bond, a blood pact joined them symbolically as “brothers.” Jumping ahead a few generations, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the grandson of Maivia and Roman Reigns is the grandson of Anoa’i.
While these two aren’t technically related, they refer to one another as “cousin” and share a unique bond. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last year, The Rock detailed his and Roman’s relationship, saying, “For you guys that don’t know, Roman and I are family, we’re cousins. Our dads wrestled against each other in the ‘80s. And as a matter of fact, his dad and our uncle, Afa and Sika, they were the first Samoan tag team champions of the WWE. And then my dad and Tony Atlas became the first Black tag team champions of the WWE, beating his dad and my uncle, so it goes way back.”
Who else is in the Anoa’i wrestling family?
There are several notable wrestlers on both sides of this family that precede The Rock and Roman and come after them. Dwayne Johnson’s father, Rocky Johnson, made history in the wrestling world, and a few other big names have also built wildly successful careers from within this family including Rikishi, Jey and Jimmy Uso and more.
Is The Rock still in WWE?
While nowadays most people recognize The Rock for his acting career, some of his most notable films including Tooth Fairy (2010), Moana (2016), Jumanji (2017) and countless others, he still is an active participant in the wrestling world, signed to WWE and appearing at events here and there as a part-time performer.
