A Guide to the Silver Family on ‘Boston Blue’: Get To Know Lena, Sarah, Mae and the Rest of The Gang
Meet the members of the Silver family on ‘Boston Blue’ and learn how they’re all connected.
Boston Blue, the direct spinoff of the highly popular Blue Bloods, has quite a few similarities to its predecessor, including its family-focused dynamic. However, while Blue Bloods followed the Reagan family, Boston Blue introduced an entirely new crew: the Silvers.
The blended family is a law enforcement clan based in Boston. As opposed to the Reagans, the Silvers are not all directly related and they are a multifaith family, practicing a mix of Baptist and Jewish traditions. The Silvers also have family dinners, like the Reagans did, however they host them on Friday’s for Shabbat instead of Sunday after church.
In Boston Blue, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Sean Reagan (Mika Amonsen) join the Silvers for a weekly Shabbat dinner, thanks to their partnerships with Lena and Jonah Silver. This diverse family dynamic was loosely based on the real-life experiences of co-creator Brandon Sonnier.
“When I watched Blue Bloods, I always thought, ‘This is like my family, but I would like it to look like my family,’” Sonnier shared. Hence, he created the Silver family.
Meet the Silver family—Reverend Peters, Mae, Ben, Lena, Sarah and Jonah—and learn who is seated at the dinner table every Friday night.
Reverend Edwin Peters

Portrayed by Ernie Hudson, Reverend Edwin Peters is the head of the dinner table and the patriarch of the Silver family, similar to Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) on Blue Bloods. The Reverend is a pastor at a Baptist church in Boston, often sharing his wisdom and compassion, not only with church-goers but with his family.
Reverend Peters is the father of District Attorney Mae Silver and grandfather of Lena, Sarah and Jonah Silver. Hudson opened up about his character and the interesting family dynamic of the Silvers.
“I play a Baptist minister, head of one of the oldest Black churches in the country and very involved in the community,” Hudson shared. “It allows my character a chance to bring a different perspective to things.”
Mae Silver

Mae Silver, played by Gloria Reuben, is the District Attorney of Boston and daughter of Reverend Peters. She was previously married to Ben Silver and converted from being a Baptist to Judaism after they tied the knot. However, Mae was left widowed when Ben was murdered.
Mae has a blended family, as she is the mother of Lena and Jonah Silver, and the stepmother of Sarah Silver.
“I love playing Mae Silver,” Reuben shared about her character online. “Fiercely intelligent, does not suffer fools, morally righteous, powerful–but also a loving mother uniting an interfaith, multigenerational family.”
Ben Silver
Ben Silver, who does not appear in Boston Blue, is the deceased husband of Mae Silver. He was the biological father of Sarah and Jonah Silver and the stepfather of Lena. Ben was Jewish and a District Judge in Boston. Ben was killed off prior to the start of the show by Ronan Flaherty (Jack Murray).
The Silvers are currently dealing with the fallout as Ronan was released from prison in a recent episode and then murdered.
Lena Silver

Portrayed by Sonequa Martin-Green, Lena Silver is a lead detective for the Boston PD, recently partnered with Danny Reagan. Lena is the granddaughter of Reverend Peters, biological daughter of Mae Silver, stepsister of Sarah and half-sister of Jonah.
Lena’s biological father is absent and unknown in the show, as she was raised solely by her mother until Mae married Ben. Martin-Green described her character in the show as “faith-filled, family oriented and gifted in precision.”
Sarah Silver

Sarah Silver, who is played by Maggie Lawson, is the Superintendent of Detectives for the Boston PD. She is the stepdaughter of Mae Silver and biological daughter of Ben Silver, stepsister to Lena and half-sister of Jonah. Nothing is known about her biological mother in the series.
Sarah is also in a committed relationship with her boyfriend, Seth (Mike Vogel), who has a teenage daughter of his own, Phoebe (Matia Jackett). The Superintendent is strong-willed and compassionate, however she often has to balance the high stakes of her job and her devotion to her family.
“Sarah Silver in three words,” Lawson shared, “I’d say composed, compassionate and fair.”
Jonah Silver

The youngest of the blended Silver family is Jonah Silver, portrayed by Marcus Scribner. Jonah is a rookie Boston police officer, partnered with his best friend, Sean Reagan. He is the biological son of Mae and Ben Silver, as well as the half-brother of both Lena and Sarah and grandson of Reverend Peters.
Jonah is confident and very passionate about his job. However, he often struggles with his emotions regarding the murder of his father. Scribner describes his character as “driven, charismatic and learning.”
Be sure to tune into Boston Blue on Friday nights at 10 PM ET/PT on CBS or catch it the next day on Paramount +!
