“The truth is out there,” and the truth is that The X-FIles is making its way back to screens with an exciting new remake! The hit series starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson has earned itself a cult following over the years, and the series was even revived back in 2016 after it originally concluded in 2002. Fans can’t hear that iconic theme song without being transported back in time, and now, there’s a chance we’ll get to enjoy a whole new chapter. Here, read all about what we can expect from the new X-Files reboot, who is involved and when we might see it on screen!

‘The X-Files’ remake has been ordered a pilot

There has long been chatter regarding an X-Files reboot entirely separate from the show’s revival back in 2016, but it wasn’t until now that things were looking official. Hulu has officially ordered a pilot for a remake of the show, and it just so happens to be directed by none other than Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind the award-winning movie Sinners (2025) starring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld.

Coogler’s involvement in the project has been known for quite some time, and illustrating a new era of this classic series is rather personal to him thanks to his mom, who has been a longtime fan of the show. “Like my relationship with Rocky with my dad, The X-Files is one of those things with my mom,” Coogler told Variety in 2025. “My mom means the world to me, so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”

While there aren’t yet a ton of details regarding the show’s plot, its official logline explains that, “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”

What was the original ‘X-Files’ about?

The original X-Files followed Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, two investigators tasked with looking into a series of suspicious, unexplainable cases—The X-Files. While Mulder is a tried and true believer in all things extra-terrestrial, Dana Scully, a doctor with a science background, is harder to convince. Their investigations take them on unexpected journeys, and their dynamic and chemistry made this show a fan-favorite.

Who is starring in the ‘X-Files’ remake?

Ryan Coogler’s X-Files just cast Danielle Deadwyler in one of the lead roles. Deadwyler has been showcasing her skills on screen for the last few years, known for her work in Till (2022), Carry On (2024) and The Woman in the Yard (2025). While there’s no saying whether or not Gillian Anderson or David Duchovny might make an appearance, we definitely wouldn’t be mad about it!

When does the ‘X-Files’ remake come out?

We don’t have an official premiere date yet, but the fact that Hulu has ordered the pilot is incredibly exciting news for fans who’ve been waiting for this moment! With Ryan Coogler’s passion for the project and his commitment to honoring both the original series and the fans who love it, we have every reason to believe this reboot will capture the magic that made The X-Files a cultural phenomenon. The truth is out there—and soon, we’ll get to discover it all over again!
