Marilyn Monroe needs no introduction — her style and talent still inspire countless women today. However, not many of Marilyn’s modern-day fans are familiar with her eating habits. Admirers may be surprised to learn how protein-rich — and easy — her dinners were.
In a conversation circa 1952 with now-defunct Pageant magazine, the legendary actress confessed that many folks called her eating habits “bizarre.” But according to the archived interview, which has since been republished on Into the Gloss, her go-to meals seem pretty common for many healthy eaters today. She told the magazine:
“My dinners at home are startlingly simple. Every night I stop at the market near my hotel and pick up a steak, lamb chops or some liver, which I broil in the electric oven in my room. I usually eat four or five raw carrots with my meat, and that is all. I must be part rabbit; I never get bored with raw carrots.”
At first glance, one might wonder if Marilyn was on the keto diet, or at least a similar low-carb plan. But as Perfect Keto points out, carrots are actually considered a high-carb vegetable. Much like potatoes and turnips, a small side dish of carrots can push you over the limit of carbs allowed on keto.
Considering Marilyn’s playful comparison of herself to a rabbit, we can probably assume her carrots took up a good portion of her dinner plate. On top of that, Marilyn was also known to indulge in the occasional hot-fudge sundae for dessert, which certainly wouldn’t fit any low-carb diet, especially not keto.
But even though Marilyn didn’t stick to a strict low-carb diet, it is pretty impressive how much protein she fit into her daily meals. After all, she admitted in that same Pageant interview that she often mixed two raw eggs with hot milk for her breakfast. While that meal might not seem exactly appetizing, it certainly sounds filling. Likewise, steak, lamb chops, and liver are all satisfying foods that could easily be part of many healthy eating plans in modern times — just simply swap the carrots for some leafy greens and you’re good to go!
Though we have to admit, the occasional hot-fudge sundae sounds like the best part about eating like Marilyn!
