Oprah Gets Real About Why She Never Married Longtime Boyfriend Stedman Graham

What a confession! Though they’ve been dating for more than 30 years, Oprah Winfrey and her longtime boyfriend, Stedman Graham, have never married — and now, the media mogul is candidly opening up about why they chose to forgo tying the knot.

During a recent sit-down with Vogue for the magazine’s September issue, Oprah, 63, revealed she and Stedman, 66, have barely discussed their decision to not make their union official during their relationship. “Nobody believes it, but it’s true. The only time I brought it up was when I said to Stedman, ‘What would have happened if we had actually gotten married?'” she said.

Despite never exchanging vows, Oprah assured she and Stedman are more in love than ever — and have taught each other many valuable lessons over the years. Her favorite? “Live life on your own terms,” she explained. The former daytime TV host and Stedman began dating in 1986. They were once engaged to be married in September 1992, but the two ultimately chose to call off their wedding and focus on their “spiritual union” instead.

Throughout their romance, the couple has often dealt with rumors swirling that they’ve secretly married. In September 2016, Oprah addressed the latest bout of wedding gossip via her Twitter account. “[Six] people who know me well have called today congratulating me or [acting] surprised they weren’t invited to my wedding. It’s not true!!!” she wrote at the time.
