Dream Job Alert: Queen Elizabeth Is Hiring a Cook

Tags:

As far as catering jobs go, this is the the cherry on top. Buckingham Palace is advertising for a new full-time Chef de Partie, whose responsibilities will include whipping up dishes for Queen Elizabeth and her friends at state dinners and royal receptions. The role also includes live-in accommodation and complimentary meals, which makes it sound like one lucky applicant will actually be living at Buckingham Palace, the residence of the queen.

Sounds too good to be true? There’s a catch; if you take up this offer, your salary will decrease to reflect living in a palace and it’s already quite low at £21,151.88 ($28,685.77 USD) — nearly £2,000 ($2,712 USD) less than the average for chefs in the capital. There are other perks, though: The pension contribution from British Parliament will be 15 percent, and the chef who gets the job will enjoy 33 days of vacation, inclusive of bank holidays (a concept similar to US federal holidays).

“This is no ordinary Demi Chef de Partie role,” the job description reads. “In our state-of-the-art kitchens, you’ll prepare classical and contemporary menus for a wide range of events, learning essential skills that will provide stepping stones for a great career.” The description adds: “Joining our accomplished and close-knit team, you’ll work hands-on to deliver food to the very highest standards. Working with quality ingredients and highly skilled colleagues, you’ll develop specific technical skills, rotating through all sections of the kitchen.” The description goes on to say that the Chef de Partie will not only cook for royalty and state visits, but also staff lunches, and that they may be required to move around the royal residences. Are you are as interested as we are in working for the Queen of England? You should apply because the closing date is May 24. Now, we just have to learn how to cook like a chef before that deadline.
