Queen Elizabeth is on the lookout for a new gardener to help maintain her luxurious Buckingham Palace yards. Even those of us with a green thumb would feel intimidated tending to a space with so many admirers, royal and not. With the pressure to make sure every shrub is perfectly pruned and every flower in bloom, you would think whoever lands this gig would make a pretty penny, errr, pound.
The listing for Senior Gardner has a serious job description: “It’s tending to gardens that thousands will admire. It’s taking every opportunity to make your mark. And it’s the pride in joining a team at the heart of a world famous institution. This is what makes working for the Royal Household exceptional.”
Sounds impressive so far! It continues to list duties like maintaining a section of the garden, leading a small team, allocating daily tasks, and carrying out some of those tasks as well. Understandably, they are looking for someone with a “passion for horticulture, backed up with a relevant qualification.”
So how much does this level of dedication to the royal family’s garden stack up in terms of a paycheck? According to the job listing, £22,000 (roughly $26,709 in US dollars) annually, “depending on experience.” We sure hope someone with plenty of experience will be able to negotiate a boost in that salary. With all the pressure riding on them to make sure every seed grows to its fullest potential, so definitely deserve to get paid fairly for that effort. Loosen up those straps on the purse you carry with you everywhere, Elizabeth!
