Queen Elizabeth Wore a Subtle Tribute to Prince Philip In Her First Appearance After His Funeral

Queen Elizabeth is keeping her late husband, Prince Philip, close to her heart even as she resumes royal duties. That was made clear with a subtle yet meaningful tribute to their marriage she wore during her most recent appearance.

While meeting with ambassadors from the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire yesterday, the 95-year-old monarch pinned a gorgeous diamond brooch to her dress. Although it’s easy to overlook (she wears beautiful jewelry all the time, after all), this particular piece holds extra sentimental value. The brooch was originally part of a tiara sent to Elizabeth as a wedding gift from the Nizam of Hyderabad to celebrate her union with Philip in 1947.

She has worn it on many occasions over the years, but it seems to be an especially significant choice for her first public appearance following Philip’s funeral and the end of her official mourning period.

Elizabeth also seemed to be in a much brighter mood as she shared a kind smile with the ambassadors and wore a pale blue dress rather than somber black. Take a look:

These meetings were held virtually with Queen Elizabeth continuing to reside at Windsor Castle, where she has spent most of her time during the pandemic. Ordinarily, she greets newly appointed ambassadors in person at Buckingham Palace, but this is an understandable shift in protocol.

It’s so nice to see a lovely grin on the queen’s face after coping with the loss of her husband over the last few weeks. We’re sure having her family close by (and enjoying a quiet celebration for her birthday) are helping to lift her spirits. We also hope that Elizabeth will have even more reasons to smile as the family toasts Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 10th wedding anniversary week!
