Princess Beatrice Will Gain a New Royal Title After Marriage, Unlike Her Sister Eugenie
Hint: It has nothing to do with her grandma.
In a surprising twist of royal fate, Princess Beatrice will soon be adding a new title to her name just as her cousin, Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan are turning away from theirs.
Beatrice will gain the the title of countess after saying “I do” to fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi (or simply Edo, as she calls him) in May this year. If you’re trying to remember if her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, received a similar bump in regal monikers after tying the knot with husband Jack Brooksbank in October 2018… nope, she did not.
Don’t worry, it has nothing to do with Queen Elizabeth playing favorites when it comes to her grandchildren. Beatrice also isn’t picking up any slack left behind by Harry and Meghan. It actually just boils down to the fact that she isn’t the only royal descendant in her relationship.
That’s right, Edo is technically a count through his own noble lineage in Italy. His father, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, recently told Daily Mail, “Edoardo is the only male descendent taking the family into the next generation. He is a count – his wife will be a countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna [noble women].”
According to Vanity Fair, Edo’s family history dates all the way back to the 10th century as part of the Italian royal House of Savoy. The count and countess titles are similar to duke and duchess, but not quite as high in ranking. For example, the wife of Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son (AKA farther down the line to the throne), Prince Edward, is known as the Countess of Wessex.
You may have noticed, however, that there aren’t currently any kings, queens, or other type of royalty reigning over Italy. The monarchy disbanded in 1949, but the families were able to maintain and pass on their titles as a courtesy.
On top of the new title, Beatrice’s marriage to Edo will allow her to live in a lavish mansion called Villa Mapelli Mozzi outside of Milan, which he is set to inherit. It might not be quite as impressive as Buckingham Palace, but we wouldn’t turn down a stay at the 18th century abode. And that apparently would be totally possible if we had at least $5,566 to burn on reserving two nights at the villa on Booking.com. Imagine not only being able to afford that, but the possibility of seeing the princess swing by for a visit while you’re relaxing?
Of course, regardless of titles or mansions, we just hope Beatrice and her beau have the brightest future ahead of them as they become husband and wife. And hey, if they ever feel like inviting us over for a slumber party at the villa, we’ll hop right on the next flight!
