Dolly Parton wears many hats—musician, philanthropist, actress and perhaps one of our favorite roles of hers, author. Over the years, the “Jolene” singer has penned several children’s books, including Coat of Many Colors and I Am a Rainbow, however, it’s her most recent series of books that tell the story of playful pup Billy the Kid that has us talking! Dolly recently announced that her all-new book, Billy the Kid Dances His Heart Out, will be hitting shelves on December 2, and we can hardly contain our excitement! All about Dolly Parton’s new ‘Billy the Kid’ book
For the books in this series, Dolly took inspiration from her god-dog Billy the Kid, an adorable French bulldog the singer is lucky to love! The first two children’s books in the series, Billy the Kid Makes It Big and Billy the Kid Comes Home For Christmas, take us along on Billy’s adventures. The first book follows Billy, a pup with a deep love for country music, as he journeys to Nashville to pursue his musical dreams. The second holiday-themed book follows Billy throughout the jolly season. While he enjoys the success he’s found as a musician in Nashville, he finds himself wondering if something is missing in the midst of the Christmas season.
The third book set to hit shelves this December takes us along on yet another adventure led by Billy the Kid. In Billy the Kid Dances His Heart Out, though the lead character knows what it’s like to perform his music in front of enormous crowds, dancing in front of them is a different story. With him and his band set to open up for Dolly Parton’s Doggy Dance Pawty, he and his crew put in the work to improve their moves—and his dance teacher Bella manages to catch his eye.
With the first two books in this series being such a success, it’s safe to say that fans were delighted to hear about this next installment. “Our family loves the Billy the Kid books! I’ve had to read the Christmas one to my son probably 1,000 times since he got it as a gift for Christmas,” wrote one Instagram user in the comments of Dolly’s post announcing the book. “Yay!! Love these books!!!,” exclaimed another.
“I am excited to introduce Bella into Billy’s life in our new book!,” says Dolly. “Creating stories that are fun, real, and carry life lessons hopefully makes it meaningful for children and their parents to experience the joy of reading together.”
How Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library inspires kids globally
While books play an important role in Dolly’s life as an author, Dolly has been contributing to child literacy for decades. “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income,” says the organization’s site. What started as a program serving the Tennessee area in which Dolly grew up has expanded globally and continues to serve children every day.
