Bewitched remains one of the most enchanting shows ever made, and certainly the leader of the fantasy sitcoms produced in the 1960s. At the same time, it made household names out of cast members Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York and Agnes Moorehead, while cementing the stardom of Paul Lynde.

As is well known, Bewitched is a domestic sitcom with a twist in that Samantha Stephens (Montgomery) is a witch who marries a mortal named Darrin Stephens (York). They try their best to lead a normal, non-magical life, which becomes impossible thanks to the intrusions of her magical family, in particular her mother, Endora (Moorehead).

The audience absolutely loved it, allowing the show to run for eight seasons from 1964 to 1972 and a total of 254 episodes. What follows is a special behind-the-scenes look at the show through a series of rare photographs that feature cast and crew off-camera.

Let’s twitch our noses and get started.

Erin Murphy as Tabitha

This shot of actress Agnes Moorehead (Endora) was taken in her dressing room circa 1965. Interestingly, she wasn’t all that interested in the show at the beginning, especially given her success on stage and in film, but she ended up loving it.

Paul Lynde as Uncle Arthur

Bewitched was filled with Samantha’s frequently visited by magical relatives, but none of them were as popular as the late Paul Lynde as prankster warlock Uncle Arthur. What’s really hard to believe is that he only appeared in 11 episodes out of the 254 that were produced, because it felt like he was a semi-regular.

Actress Alice Pearce, who had played Mrs. Kravitz, was forced to leave Bewitched due to serious health issues. Sandra Gould was brought in to replace her, and this image features her, Marion Lorne (back to camera), who portrayed Aunt Clara; and Elizabeth Montgomery. It was taken in 1966.

Endora and Maurice

Samantha’s parents, Endora and Maurice, fought constantly on the show, but behind the scenes Maurice Evans (you may know him as Dr. Zaius in the original Planet of the Apes films) and Agnes Moorehead got along famously. This was them in 1971.

Esmeralda and Doctor Bombay

BEWITCHED, from left: Alice Ghostley, Bernard Fox, (1966) 1964-1972.

After Aunt Clara actress Marion Lorne passed away, Alice Ghostley was brought in on a recurring basis as bumbling witch Esmeralda, who would frequently babysit the Stephens children. Additionally, Bernard Fox played Doctor Bombay (who was usually summoned by Samantha by calling out, “Doctor Bombay, Doctor Bombay, come right away”).
