Winona Ryder Joins ‘Wednesday’ Season 3—Her Mystery Role Has Fans Buzzing
Netflix confirms 'Wednesday' Season 3 and teases family secrets
Wednesday fans, we have some exciting news! Winona Ryder, 54, is joining the Season 3 cast! It will be the first time the actress has worked on anything related to the Addams family, but it will be the second time she’s teamed up with the show’s lead, Jenna Ortega. Below, we share everything you need to know about Wednesday Season 3, and Ryder’s role, which currently isn’t as creepy and kooky as one might believe.
‘Wednesday’ season 3 is in the works
It’s been a little over three years since Netflix’s Wednesday premiered and since then fans have been hanging on the show every word, waiting to see what the students and staff of Nevermore Academy will get up to next. And while Season 2 was filled with bombshells—see details and spoilers below—Season 3 is shaping up to be the strangest season yet.
“Our goal for season 3 is the same as it is for every season: to make it the best season of Wednesday we possibly can,” Alfred Gough, co-creator and showrunner, told Tudum by Netflix. “[Co-creator and co-showrunner] Miles [Millar] and I have been doing this long enough to know that shows like this don’t come along every day. It’s such an alchemy of writing, directing, acting, crew, streamer, studio and fans. We remain grateful and excited to continue this journey and tell these stories with all of our partners.”
The early green light underscores the streamer’s faith in the Addams Family spin-off, which became a cultural phenomenon when it premiered in 2022. The show quickly shattered records, becoming the most-watched English-language series in a single week with 341 million hours viewed, overtaking Stranger Things season 4.

“We want to continue digging deeper into our characters while expanding the world of Nevermore and Wednesday,” Miller said in that same conversation with Tudum. “We will be seeing more Addams Family members and learning more family secrets in season 3!”
Speaking of Addams family members, it was recently revealed that Eva Green would be playing Wednesday’s Aunt Ophelia.
“I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia,” Green said in a statement. “This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world, I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckoo-ness to the Addams family.”
A look at Winona Ryder’s role in ‘Wednesday’ Season 3
Today, Variety revealed that Ryder would be joining the Wednesday Season 3 cast in an undisclosed role. She will star alongside Ortega, whom she worked with on Beetlejuice, and it will be directed by her longtime friend and colleague Tim Burton.
“When it comes to Outcasts, Winona Ryder is the GOAT,” Gough and Millar told the outlet. “Her legendary partnership with Tim Burton has defined some of cinema’s most unforgettable characters. We loved collaborating with her on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome her to Nevermore.”

Burton added to that, saying, “I am so happy that Winona has joined us, she fits right into this world. She’s a dear friend. I always feel lucky to work with her.”
‘Wednesday’ season 2 ending explained
Season 2 picked up where Season 1 left off, with Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) uncovering the true identity of Hyde, Tyler Galpin, while dealing with the aftermath of the shocking events at Nevermore Academy. Following that, the season dove deeper into the mysteries surrounding the school and Wednesday’s own mysterious magical powers.
It ended with Wednesday riding on a motorcycle with her Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), in the hopes of tracking down Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), who has decided to leave the school and live as a werewolf in the wild. Viewers also see Wednesday read her Aunt Ophelia Frump’s journal, which leads to her experiencing a psychic vision of her aunt locked in Grandmama’s (Joanna Lumley) basement writing “Wednesday must die” on a wall in a creepy manner.

“It was always the plan to give viewers a glimpse of her [Ophelia] at the end of the season in a way that they weren’t expecting, and then that’s a driver into season 3,” Gough told Tudum. “Hopefully fans are very surprised and very satisfied by the finale.”
Millar added to that, saying, “That reveal is hopefully a nice breadcrumb that leads audiences to wonder about Season 3 and what the new adventure for Wednesday will be. Ophelia has been gone a long time. It left a hole in Morticia’s [Catherine Zeta-Jones] life, and a lot of unanswered questions. The re-emergence of Ophelia is going to hit this family like a bomb.”
