Audrey Hepburn had one of the most gorgeous pairs of eyes in Hollywood without question, accentuated by some seriously luscious lashes. But it wasn't just an extra coat of mascara that really made her peepers pop, the late starlet had a safety pin to thank for that.
In his book, Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit ($6.42, Amazon), her son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, reveals that after applying mascara slowly, his mother would separate each individual eyelash with a safety pin. Yikes! Alberto de Rossi, Audrey's makeup artist throughout her career, came up with the pretty wild idea to emphasize the legend's gorgeous eyes.
Get this: The average adult has 100 to 150 eyelashes on the upper eyelid and 50 to 75 eyelashes on the lower lid. So as you might imagine, separating each and every lash was an extremely precise and time-consuming process. Most of us wouldn't dare try this at home (we do not recommend), but Audrey clearly had a lot of trust in her makeup artist.
As her son Sean recalls in his book, the two remained close until Alberto's death in 1975. Sean writes, "I remember her saying when he died, crying as though she had lost a brother, that she would rather not work again. I have sweet memories of going to the soccer games with him."
While we're happy that the beloved actress had such a trusting friendship with her makeup man, we'll gladly stick to less risky options for our eyes, such as no-clump mascara ($11.40, Amazon) or even an eyelash comb ($8.58, Amazon).
But of course, it never hurts to keep Audrey's ultimate beauty advice in mind as well: "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others."
