Have you ever heard of air fryer roasted oranges? I hadn’t until recently, when I came across a recipe on TikTok. It seemed like a strange way to get your vitamin C, to say the least. However, I gave it a try based on how delicious it looked in the video, and I’m so glad I did. Jen Jones, TikToker and recipe creator, says the secret to creating delicious air fryer roasted oranges is the topping. Adding a little maple syrup (or granulated sugar, if you prefer) helps caramelize the top, creating a crisp exterior that preserves the juicy interior.
How To Make Air Fryer Roasted Oranges
To make the roasted oranges, here’s what you’ll need:
- One or two navel oranges
- Maple syrup
Yep, that’s it! (This recipe calls for an air fryer, but if you don’t have one, you could also use an oven on “convect bake” mode. Then bake the slices for about eight minutes instead of four.)
I first preheated my air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. While it preheated, I washed the navel oranges and sliced them into thick circles. (I ended up using two oranges so that I wouldn’t have to use the thinnest parts of the orange for the slices.) I used a serrated knife to cut around the edges of each slice, separating the fruit from the peel. Then, I placed the slices in the air fryer basket. I poured a tiny bit of maple syrup on top of each slice, dusted them with cinnamon, and set the timer to four minutes. That was it.
After the four minutes, I let the slices roast for one extra minute to get that caramelized topping. The tops ultimately weren’t as crisp as I would have liked, but the smell that wafted through my kitchen was absolutely delicious.
My Taste Test
They didn’t look pretty, but they certainly tasted great. When I finally cut into one and ate it, I was completely wowed. It was possibly the best thing I’ve ever made in the air fryer. Full of juice and topped with an extra kick of sugar from the maple syrup, it tasted like a decadent dessert. I even tried adding a dollop of whipped cream on top, and it reminded me of an orange creamsicle.
The best part? It satisfied all of my late night cravings, and didn’t leave me with the stomachache that most sugary desserts would cause. I can’t wait to make these again — but next time, as a breakfast treat with vanilla Greek yogurt.
