Making breakfast the biggest meal of the day can help to accelerate weight loss, a new study has discovered. Researchers from a joint survey between public health institutes in California and the Czech Republic found that the frequency and timings of our meals play a key role in determining BMI (body mass index).
The team analyzed data gathered from 50,000 participants in a long-term study on diet and lifestyle. Its results showed that making supper the largest meal of the day and eating snacks throughout the day were associated with a higher BMI among participants. In contrast, not skipping breakfast and eating it as the largest of three meals throughout the day sparked the most significant decrease in BMI.
Dr. Hana Kahleová, leading the study, said the findings prove the age-old adage: “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.”
As a weight management strategy, she recommends avoiding snacks and making the most of breakfast as a main meal.
Multiple nutrition studies have highlighted the importance of breakfast when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle. A 2005 study found that people who skipped breakfast were more likely to compensate later in the day with refined carbs and fats, and less fruit and vegetables.
In terms of what to eat, whole-grain cereal or porridge are both good choices, since they come with high levels of fiber and slow-release energy to help you focus throughout the day.
This latest study comes on the heels of other complimentary findings that say eating a big breakfast can also help boost your metabolism, help you maintain a balanced diet, and increase your mood.
