The 1950s are considered television’s golden age, introducing a wide variety of shows that have withstood the test of time, many of them featuring iconic classic TV moms who have endeared themselves to generations of viewers. And while those same viewers are certainly aware of the on screen children they raised, ranging from Little Ricky to Dennis the Menace and Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver, the truth is that each of them had children of their own.

What follows, then, is our guide to 10 classic TV moms from the 1950s and their real-life children. Ten mothers, 21 children and a whole bunch of nostalgia.

1. Lucille Ball

ACTRESS: Lucille Ball (1911 to 1989)

CHARACTER: Lucy Ricardo (I Love Love, 1951 to 1957), The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour (1957 to 1960)

SHOW: I Love Lucy (1951 to 1957)

TV MOM OF: Little Ricky (Richard Keith, stage name of Keith Thibodeaux)

REAL MOM OF: Lucie Arnaz (born July 17, 1951) and Desi Arnaz Jr. (born January 19, 1953), both the children of Desi Arnaz and both enjoying careers in entertainment.

PERSONAL: Lucille Ball was married twice, first to Desi Arnaz from 1940 until their divorce in 1960; and then to stand up comedian Gary Morton from 1961 until the time of her death, April 26, 1989 at the age of 77.

2. Barbara Billingsley

ACTRESS: Barbara Billingsley (1915 to 2010)

CHARACTER: June Cleaver, married to Ward Cleaver (Hugh Beaumont)

SHOW: Leave It to Beaver (1957 to 1963)

TV MOM OF: Wally Cleaver (Tony Dow) and Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver (Jerry Mathers)

REAL MOM OF: Drew and Glenn Billingsley Jr., fathered by restaurateur Glenn Billingsley, Sr. The brothers were inspired career-wise by their father, and since 1974 have managed the Los Angeles-based Billingsley’s Restaurant.

PERSONAL: Barbara Billingsley was married three times, to Glenn Billingsley from 1941 to 1947, Roy Kellino from 1953 until his death in 1956 and William Mortensen from 1959 to 1981. She passed away on October 16, 2010 at the age of 94.

3. Jean Hagen

ACTRESS: Jean Hagen (1923 to 1977)

CHARACTER: Margaret Williams (1953 to 1956)

SHOW: Make Room for Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show (1953 to 1964)

TV MOM OF: Rusty Williams (Rusty Hamer) and Terry Williams (Sherry Jackson)

REAL MOM OF: Christine Patricia, who was born in 1952; and Aric Phillip in 1965, fathered by actor Tom Seidel. When their parents were divorced in 1965, he was awarded custody of them.

PERSONAL: Jean Hagen was married to actor Tom Seidel from 1947 until their divorce in 1965. She spent much of her life battling alcoholism to the point when, in 1968, she slipped into a coma. Emerging from it, she gave up drinking completely. Sadly she died of esophageal cancer on August 29, 1977 at the age of 54.

4. Gloria Henry

CHARACTER: Alice Mitchell, wife of Henry Mitchell (Herbert Anderson)

SHOW: Dennis the Menace (1959 to 1963)

TV MOM OF: Dennis “the Menace” Mitchell (Jay North)

REAL MOM OF: Jeffrey, Adam and Erin Ellwood, fathered by architect Craig Ellwood. Not much is known about the boys, though Erin is reportedly a designer of sorts who publicly offered tributes to her mother.

PERSONAL: Gloria Henry was married twice, first to Robert D. Lamb from 1943 until 1948, and then Craig Ellwood from 1949 until their divorce in 1977. Gloria died on April 3, 2021 at age 98.

5. June Lockhart

REAL MOM OF: Anne Kathleen Maloney (later an actress whose credits include the original Battlestar Galactica), born on September 6, 1953; and June Elizabeth Maloney, born on November 21, 1955.

PERSONAL: June Lockhart was married twice — to John F. Maloney from 1951 until their divorce in 1959, and architect  John Lindsay from 1959 until they divorced in 1970. She’s 99 years old.

REAL MOM OF: Actress Anne Archer and son Gregg Bowman, who kept the actual last name of his father, John Archer, who had been born with the surname Bowman.

PERSONAL: Marjorie Lord was married to John Archer from 1941 until their divorce in 1955, Randolph Hale from 1958 until his death in 1974 and banker Harry Volk from 1976 until his death in 2000. On November 28, 2015, she passed away at age 97.

7. Harriet Nelson

REAL MOM OF: David and Ricky Nelson

PERSONAL: Harriet Nelson married Roy Sedley in 1930, though the marriage was annulled three years later. Then, in 1935, she married Ozzie Nelson and was with him until her death nearly 40 years later on October 2, 1994. She was 85.

8. Donna Reed

ACTRESS: Donna Reed (1921 to 1986)

CHARACTER: Donna Stone

SHOW: The Donna Reed Show (1958 to 1966)

TV MOM OF: Mary Stone (Shelley Fabares) and Jeff Stone (Paul Peterson)

REAL MOM OF: Penny Jane, born in 1945; Anthony, born 1946; Timothy, born in 1949; and Mary Anne, born in 1957, all raised by Donna and second husband, Tony Owen.

PERSONAL: Donna Reed was married to makeup artist William J. Tuttle from 1943 until their divorce two years later; producer Tony Owen from 1945 until they divorced in 1971; and retired United States colonel Grover W. Amus in 1974, with whom she was with until her death in 1986. She died on January 14 at age 64.

9. Marjorie Reynolds

TV MOM OF: Babs (Lugene Sanders) and Junior (Wesley Morgan)

REAL MOM OF: Linda Reynolds, who early on pursued an acting career, but gradually shifted behind the scenes and worked as a casting director.

PERSONAL: Marjorie Reynolds was married to casting director Jack Reynolds from 1936 until their divorce in 1952, and actor John M. Haffen from 1953 until his death in 1985. She died at the age of 79 on February 1, 1997.

10. Jane Wyatt

ACTRESS: Jane Wyatt (1910 to 2006; 96-years-old)

CHARACTER: Margaret Anderson, wife of Jim Anderson (Robert Young)

TV MOM OF: Betty “Princess” Anderson (Elinor Donahue), James “Bud” Anderson Jr. (Billy Gray) and Kathy “Kitten” Anderson (Lauren Chapin)

REAL MOM OF: Christopher and Michael Ward, fathered by investment broker Edgar Bethune Ward.

PERSONAL: Jane Wyatt was married to Edgar Bethune Ward from 1935 until his death in 2000. Grandmother to three and great-grandmother to five, she passed away on October 20, 2006 at age 96.
